
The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly marked Commonwealth Day 2026 on Monday with a public statement highlighting the Territory’s links to the wider Commonwealth network and the role of local democratic institutions. In the release issued on March 9, the Assembly said the Commonwealth flag was flown alongside the Falklands flag on Victory Green, reflecting “our pride in being part of the Commonwealth family of nations.”

To mark Commonwealth Day, Monday 9 March, young people from the Falkland Islands will take their seats in the Chamber to question Members of the Legislative Assembly on the issues that matter to them.

The 12th Commonwealth Youth Parliament will be held in Wellington, New Zealand, 2-5 September 2024. The Falkland Islands Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) would like to invite expressions of interest in representing the Islands at CYP 2024.

Young Falkland Islanders, Ulia Sytchova and Vicky Collier recently represented the Falkland Islands at the 7th Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP) in Darwin, Australia from November first to five.

Falkland Islander Krysteen Ormond (23) has completed the Commonwealth Youth Parliament 2012 with her interest in politics augmented and urges other young people to take advantage of the experience if the chance arises.

Thoroughly aware of the sheer volume of work involved in politics at the recent Commonwealth Youth Parliament (CYP), Nadia Smith said such a high level career may not be for her just yet, “but there was a strong possibility the Falklands Legislative Assembly may beckon one day.”
