South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are currently promoting the release of a set of stamps commemorating the life of the former Falklands and dependencies governor Sir Rex Hunt. The release of the stamps on June 11 coincided with a memorial service for Sir Rex Hunt at St Clement Danes, the Central Church of the Royal Air Force, London.
The British Government has paid tribute to Sir Rex Hunt for his courage and leadership as Governor of the Falkland Islands during Argentina’s 1982 invasion and for his part in the modern, prosperous Falklands of today.
The Shackleton Scholarship Fund which is closely linked to the South Atlantic and the Falkland Islands has announced the launch of their new website: www.shackletonfund.com.
The remarkable recovery of the Falklands Islands from the 1982 invasion and the Islanders’ impressive achievements since have been given valuable publicity at a three-day conference at Kent University in the United Kingdom marking the 30th anniversary. It was attended by a distinguished group of academics, military commanders, journalists, and three former governors, Alan Huckle, David Tatham and Howard Pearce.
As previously reported by Mercopress, Mr David Tatham, a former Governor of the Falkland Islands, stood down as chair of the Falkland Islands Association at the recent Annual General Meeting of the Association held on 10th December after the Battle Day Ceremony of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London.
Falklands Battle Day was commemorated in Britain this year on Saturday December 10th at the Cenotaph, in fine sunny weather.
