Unasur Secretary General Ernesto Samper in his first overseas official trip this week visited Argentina, where he met with President Cristina Fernandez and foreign minister Hector Timerman, and also held a round of political talks and other ministerial meetings.
Former Colombian president Ernesto Samper was inaugurated on Thursday as Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations, Unasur, by Surinam's Desire Bouterse who holds the rotating presidency of the group.
Former Colombian president Ernesto Samper was confirmed as Unasur Secretary General following a consultation of the group's member countries presidents. The announcement had been delayed because a Union of South American Nations summit to be held in Montevideo this month was suspended.
Uruguay will ask fellow members at the Unasur summit to be held in Montevideo later in the month to discuss the Gaza Strip situation, said Foreign minister Luis Almagro who next week will be meeting a delegation from the Palestine Authority. Almagro and president Jose Mujica have been questioned for using the words 'genocide' and 'massacre' to describe the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
