Since contrary to other South American governments where voting is mandatory, (Uruguay and Chile, two neighbors), and since the Falkland Islands are a very small community, without political parties, the elected Government campaigns to ensure citizens effectively vote and the bravest consider candidacy.

The Legislative Assembly has been dissolved ahead of the General Election that will take place on 11 December 2025. The Proclamation sets out the timetable for the General Election, which is as follows:

The Falkland Islands Government Legislative Assembly, made up of eight elected members, which holds full internal self-governance, with the power to legislate for the “peace, order and good government” of the islands under the Islands 2009 Constitution.

Ahead of the General Election expected to take place in December 2025, the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly has prepared a set of resources to provide clear and accessible information on the Islands’ political system, the role of MLAs, and the election process.
