Busy months ahead for Falkland Islands lawmakers who will be attending at a very special moment several overseas meetings of major interest for the Islands. In coming weeks the Falklands as a British Overseas Territory faces one of its greatest challenges for its future, in uncharted waters and still unclear trade and political consequences, such is the impact of Brexit.
The Falkland Islands elected Legislative Assembly welcomed the statement of Secretary of Defense before the House of Commons and said it was reassuring that the UK government remains committed to the defense of the Islands, and equally significant the strong support received by the secretary from members of Parliament.
The Foreign Office has reiterated its concern about the Argentine’s government behaviour towards the Falkland Islanders and considers it ‘right and proper’ that they should be involved in the part of those meetings with Argentina that concern the Islands.
The Falkland Islands government said on Friday it deeply regrets that Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman refused to meet with lawmakers from the Islands and Foreign Secretary William Hague, next week when he travels to London.
