    FAO Director General calls for ocean sustainable solutions for fisheries

    Various investments in ocean sustainability will raise the amount of fish to feed the poor, helping drive progress towards the eradication of hunger which is the lynchpin for achieving the other Sustainable Development Goals, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said in a speech.

    Higher prices for vegetable oils and meat during September, FAO report

    FAO raised its estimates for worldwide coarse grains production based on an improved outlook for barley production and better maize prospects in Brazil and the U.S.

    Global food prices were steady in September, as lower sugar prices were offset by increased quotations for vegetable oils and meat. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of commonly-traded food commodities, averaged 170 points in September, virtually unchanged from August and 3.3 per cent higher than in the same month in 2018.

    Bolsonaro denies hunger in Brazil; FAO says 5.1 million are “undernourished”

    Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday there was no hunger in the country, citing the lack of “poor people in the street with a skeletal physique” as evidence. Speaking to foreign journalists, Bolsonaro blamed “populists” for propagating “a big lie” that some of Brazil's 209 million people did not have enough to eat.

    FAO's latest forecast for world cereal production in 2019 - available in the Cereal Supply and Demand Brief- points to an increase of 1.2 percent from the previous year to reach 2 685 million tons, a sharp downward revision from the forecast made in May when global cereal production was predicted to expand by 2.7 percent.

    Global food prices rose for the fifth consecutive month in May, pushed up by rising prices of cheese and maize due to adverse weather conditions. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of commonly traded food commodities, averaged 172.4 points in May, up 1.2 per cent from the previous month while still 1.9 per cent below its level in May 2018.

    Family farmers have an important role in the global fight to end hunger and promote a healthy diet, according to the President of the United Nations General Assembly, María Fernanda Espinosa. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) states that, in a context in which almost one million plants and animal species are endangered by the impact of man, traditional agriculture can make a contribution essential to safeguard agricultural biodiversity.
