    Uruguay supports China's candidate as next FAO Director General

    Deputy minister Qu Dongyu is one of five candidates which have been presented by FAO Member Countries for the post of FAO Director-General

    Uruguay formally announced it will support China's Agriculture and Rural Affairs deputy minister as the next Director-General of FAO to be elected June 2019. The official statement was made by Uruguay's foreign minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa during a meeting with China's Deputy Prime Minister Hu Chunhua in Montevideo.

    Global food prices started 2019 with a rebound, says FAO

    The FAO Dairy Price Index rose 7.2 percent from December, reversing seven months of falling prices

    Global food prices began the year on a buoyant note, as the FAO Food Price Index averaged 164.8 points in January 2019, up 1.8 percent from the previous month. A sharp rebound in dairy price quotations and firmer prices of palm and soy oils drove the increase, the United Nations agency said today.

    Global food prices up 0.8% in September, according to FAO Index

    Argentina and Brazil are expected to be the main beneficiaries of the projected expansion in world trade in coarse grains.

    Global food prices rose slightly in September, as firmer prices of vegetable oils and to a lesser extent dairy products offset declining prices for staple cereal grains. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 178.4 points for the month of September, up 0.8% from August and marking a 4.3% increase from a year earlier.

    FAO calls on all countries to crack down on illegal fishing
