  Life on South Georgia as a Government Officer, “the best decision of my life”

  

  By Nadine Orme - As I walk to work this morning, I pause to allow a group of penguins the time to wander down the path in front of me. This may sound like a dream, but for me it is day to day reality, and it’s absolutely incredible. From the moment I arrived here I knew I had made the best decision of my life in coming to work on South Georgia as a government officer.

  South Georgia, new electronic permit system (EPS) for visitors next season

  

  The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands has announced that it will launch a new electronic permit system (EPS) for visitors to the Territories in advance of the next tourist season, replacing the current system of levying landing fees by an individual visitor permit charge. The cost of a visitor permit will be set initially at £200.

  HMS Protector pays tribute to explorer Shackleton at South Georgia on her trip to Antarctica

  

  Sailors from Ice Patrol HMS Protector paid tribute to legendary Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton – a century after he died pushing the boundaries of polar research. The crew of the icebreaker held a memorial service at his graveside on the island of South Georgia – the latest stop for the survey ship as she heads to the frozen continent for a summer of scientific research.

  A new stamp issue, which gives audiences a new perspective on Grytviken, was released in May, reports the latest edition of the South Georgia Newsletter. A hundred years ago, commercial whaling came to South Georgia. Carl Larsen pioneered shore-based facilities to process their catch.

  Shackleton Centenary Thanksgiving Service

  

  Tribute was paid to the courage and endurance of the Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and his men at a centenary service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey in London on Friday, May 20th commemorating their survival in their Trans- Antarctic expedition.
