  Kidnapped Ecuadorian councilman found dead

  

  Councilman Bolívar Vera, 42, of the municipality of Durán was kidnapped and murdered in a new episode of Ecuador's political violence saga one month ahead of the presidential runoff. Vera's body was found Friday on a road in the rural sector of Salitre with his hands tied in the province of Guayas, it was also reported. He had been reported missing on Thursday, Sept. 7.

  Ecuador: Death toll in prison clashes rises to 31

  

  Ecuadorian authorities Tuesday confirmed that the number of inmates killed in prison clashes nationwide since July 22 had reached 31. In this scenario, President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency in all correctional facilities for 60 days, through which some 2,700 law enforcement officers carried out a control operation at the premises, it was announced.

  Ecuador prison violence: 12 inmates killed in gunfight

  

  A new episode of violence has left at least another 12 inmates dead after gunfights at the Guayaquil El Litoral jailhouse, it was reported Saturday. It was the second massacre within the same week at that infamous prison involving rival gangs clashing over drug trafficking territorial control.

  Ecuador, Belgium sign cooperation deal against drug trafficking

  

  Interior Ministers Juan Zapata of Ecuador and Annelies Verlinden of Belgium Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding whereby police forces of both countries are to exchange information and training to tackle transnational crime, it was reported. Also participating at the signing ceremony was European Union Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson.

  Ecuador's Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo has been sacked by President Guillermo Lasso after the official was linked to a case of femicide, it was reported in Quito. Colonel Juan Zapata has been appointed as the new Minister of Interior.
