April 2nd is a very special day in the Argentine calendar, a national holiday, which recalls the Falklands conflict, (when the Argentine military landed and occupied the Islands that day in 1982) and is remembered as the “Day of the Malvinas Veteran and the Fallen in combat”.
“The Malvinas Islands will finally, through diplomacy, be Argentine”, said Argentina's Defense minister Oscar Aguad on Tuesday at the main ceremony on the start of the 37th anniversary of the South Atlantic conflict with the United Kingdom.
The Malvinas Islands remain inexorably Argentine said president Mauricio Macri in a message in the social networks aired following the tribute to the Malvinas war veterans at the cenotaph in central Buenos Aires and later meeting with officers and veterans at the Olivos residence.
Argentina will change its official protocol for visiting officials: besides the traditional flower wreath at the monument of General Jose de San Martin, visitors will also have to pay homage to the fallen in the Malvinas Islands at the cenotaph with their names at the Wall pages.
