    It's official: US creates the sixth military branch, the Space Force

    The legislation creates the Department of Defense's sixth force, a coequal of the five existing forces - the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

    President Donald Trump signed legislation on Friday to create a full-fledged Pentagon force for combat in outer space - the first new military service in seven decades. Capping an ambitious order Trump issued in June 2018, the US Space Force officially came into being when Trump signed the annual military budget, the US$738 billion National Defense Authorization Act.

    Japan boosts defense budget spending for eighth straight year

    Japan's government on Friday approved an eighth straight annual increase in defense spending to a record high as it buys US-made stealth fighters, interceptor missiles and other equipment to counter military build-ups by North Korea and China.

    China increases its military budget 8.1% to US$ 175bn; regional powers “nervous”

    “Faced with profound changes in the national security environment, we must treat the Party’s goal of building a stronger armed forces for the new era,” said Li.

    China revealed on Monday that it will raise its military budget by US$ 175 billion for the 2018 fiscal year, 8.1% increase that is the largest military spending hike in three years. According to Premier Li Keqiang, the additional funding will “advance all aspects of military training and war preparedness, and firmly and resolvedly safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests.”
