  A former Chilean Socialist minister considers “delirious” the nationalization of mining industry

  

  A veteran Chilean politician who among other appointments was Minister of Mines under the deposed Socialist government of Salvador Allende in 1973, and later held other ministerial responsibilities following the return of democracy in 1990, strongly criticized the initiative to again nationalize the mining companies which operate in Chile, as proposed in the Constitutional Convention drafting a new constitution.

  Brazil's Senate passed a bill on Wednesday that tightens the safety rules and inspection for dams in the mining industry, setting fines of up to 1 billion reais (US$ 200 million) for failure to comply.

  Brazil with record trade surplus in August, despite an overall fall in global transactions

  

  Brazil obtained a record trade surplus of US$ 6,6 billion during the month of August, the highest for the month since 1989. However overall dropped with exports sliding 5.5% to US$ 17,741bn and imports, 25,1%, to US$ 11,133bn. In eight months the trade surplus reached US$ 36,594bn, the third-best historically in the last forty years.

  Mendoza province up in arms to defend its water resources from the mining industry

  

  The government of the wine-producing province of Mendoza, suspended the rule of the mining law 7.722 that had given the green light for chemicals such as cyanide and sulfuric acid to be used by the industry, but which threaten the water resources of that territory.
