  South Georgia remains free of COVID-19; Grytviken closed to visitors until next August

  

  South Georgia remains free from COVID-19. The government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, GSGSSI, have implemented strict procedures to minimize the risk of exposure to the staff at South Georgia, and work continues in as normal a fashion as possible on the island.

  Falklands' patrol vessel HMS Forth maiden visit to South Georgia

  

  The Falkland Islands' patrol vessel HMS Forth crossed 850 miles of icy ocean to patrol the waters around the South Atlantic territory’s archipelago of South Georgia. The 2,000-ton ship arrived in the Falklands at the beginning of the year as the islands’ new patrol ship, replacing the smaller HMS Clyde.

  Sanitary aircraft on Thursday will fly “Greg Mortimer” cruise Australians to Melbourne

  

  A charter flight is expected in Montevideo on Thursday, April 9 to pick up and fly home to Australia most of passengers and crew on the “Greg Mortimer”, the cruise vessel stranded off the coast of Uruguay for the last two weeks because 128 people on board have tested positive for Covid 19.

  Coin to mark 250th anniversary of the launching of James Cook HMS Resolution

  South Georgia is evidence of whales recovery, a century after they were heavily exploited

  

  A team led by the British Antarctic Survey has just returned from the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, as the last of three expeditions to investigate the recovery of whales a century after they were heavily exploited. After 30 years of protection, large numbers of whales appear to be returning to the region.

  Modern, habitat restored South Georgia recalls Possession Day and James Cook in 1775

  

  Some 245 years and a month ago, James Cook, after 3 years at sea, took possession of South Georgia and claimed the land for His Britannic Majesty, King George the Third. On what must have been a routine summer’s day (January 17th) in the South-West Atlantic, the explorer described what he had discovered as a ‘land doomed by nature to perpetual frigidness’.

  The world's biggest iceberg, 6.000 sq km, is about to enter the open ocean heading for South Georgia

  

  A68, a colossus that broke free from the Antarctic in 2017, has pushed so far north it is now at the limit of the continent's perennial sea-ice. When it calved, the berg had an area close to 6,000 sq km and has lost very little of its bulk over the past two and a half years.

  Sarah Whitby takes oath as Falklands, South Georgia Senior Magistrate

  

  Sarah Whitby was officially sworn in as the Falkland Islands Senior Magistrate at a ceremony at Government House. Mrs Whitby, previously Crown Counsel for Civil and Safeguarding, will fulfill the role of Senior Magistrate and Coroner for the Falklands, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, and the British Antarctic Territory, as well as acting Judge for the Falkland Islands.
