
Just a couple of days after the meeting between President Alberto Fernández and Xi Jinping, it was announced that the Chinese cell phone manufacturer Xiaomi will start producing some of its models in Tierra del Fuego and will expand its network of retail stores throughout the country.

Imbibed with the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict spirit, the city of Ushuaia decided to elevate the department which dealt with Malvinas Islands issues, to the rank of Secretariat, thus reaffirming the will of Ushuaia residents as the capital of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands.

In anticipation of the 40th anniversary of the Falklands/Malvinas War, in 2022, the Argentine Tierra del Fuego province legislative passed several bills making it mandatory that all teams' sportswear in all the different competitions representing the province must have the Malvinas Islands crest, and hopefully this initiative will also be implemented by other provinces.

The Tierra del Fuego provincial legislative has done some soul searching and has voted unanimously to declare next November 25, Day of the Selk'nam people genocide. It will be a day of provincial mourning with flags at half-mast and a non-working day in the extreme south province of Argentina.

The Argentine government of President Alberto Fernández has extended the so-called industrial promotion regime for the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands (which technically includes British Overseas Territories like the Falkland Islands claimed by Argentina), it was announced.

The mayor of Ushuaia, capital of Tierra del Fuego province, extreme south of Argentina honoured the descendants of ten original families that settled in the territory over a century ago. The ceremony headed by Mayor Walter Vuoto, lawmakers and members of his cabinet, took place at the Monument to the Tierra del Fuego pioneers, with the unveiling of a plaque in remembrance of the ten families represented by their descendants.

The Argentine government has earmarked some 70 million dollars, in three years, for the construction of an Antarctic Logistic Pole in Ushuaia, capital of the extreme south province of Tierra del Fuego. Some US$ 25 million will be invested next year to begin the development of the strategic project aimed at consolidating Ushuaia as the support hub for scientific research in Antarctica.

The evolution of Argentine Tierra del Fuego from an incorporated national territory to a full province, in over a century and a half, has been described by Patagonia historian Bernardo Veksler, who usually contributes with the Diario del Fin del Mundo, edited in Ushuaia.
