  Use of bicycles on the rise in Montevideo

  

  Experts in the Uruguayan capital said Monday that the use of bicycles in Montevideo has gone up by 70% since the cycling lanes were inaugurated last year. The lanes for bicycles and other non-motorized means of transport such as skateboards and rollerblades, operational since December, have been deemed a success.

  World Tourism Day celebrated globally

  

  Under the theme “more and better investment for people, planet and prosperity,” Tourism once again celebrated its Global Day Friday with special events at every typical destination for leisure travelers as customary since 1980. Defined by the United Nations as “one of the most important economic sectors in the world,” the activity accounts for 9% of the world's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

  Voepass announces major board reshuffle after Aug. 9 crash

  

  Brazilian carrier Voepass Wednesday announced a major Board of Directors reshuffle in the aftermath of the Aug. 9 accident of an ATR-72 aircraft flying in from Cascavel crashed in Vinhedo while approaching Sao Paulo's Guarulhos Airport. All 62 occupants of the aircraft were killed. Among those resigning were the heads of the maintenance (Eric Cônsoli), operations (Marcel Moura), and operational safety (David Faria) department,s and their replacements have already been chosen but are awaiting the National Civil Aviation Agency's (ANAC) nod.

  JetSmart discontinuing Buenos Aires-Montevideo route

  

  Chilean budget carrier JetSmart announced it would be lifting the Buenos Aires-Montevideo effective Oct. 1 route after finding it unprofitable, particularly when no subsidy was obtained from the Uruguayan government. The service had been operational for only four months.

  Falklands, confirmed case of avian influenza in Surf Bay, close to Stanley

  

  The Falkland Islands Director of Natural Resources has released the following, “On Monday 16 September 2024 swabs that were taken from a dead Gentoo penguin on Surf Bay were tested and returned positive for HPAI. Given that this is an isolated case of one single bird, that is more than 1km from poultry or a colony, a level 1 response will be followed and a full protection zone will not be declared.”

  Aerolíneas Argentinas strike leaves 37,000 passengers stranded

  

  Flag carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas had to cancel 319 flights Friday, altering the travel plans of some 37,000 passengers, as a result of a joint strike carried out by the airline industry labor groupings representing either pilots or crewmembers.
