    Presidents Yamandú Orsi of Uruguay and José Raúl Mulino of Panama met Monday at the Palacio de las Garzas to discuss the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and other bilateral issues. The newly-inaugurated Broad Front leader's trip reciprocated Mulino’s prior visits to Uruguay, which facilitated Panama’s entry as an Associated State of Mercosur in December 2024. The meeting also took place as part of the celebrations marking 120 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

    Uruguay's unemployment rate slightly decreased to 7.9% in February from 8.1% in January, according to a National Statistics Institute (INE) report released Friday. This represents a 0.2% drop month-over-month and a 0.4% decrease compared to February 2024, with approximately 150,900 people unemployed. The employment rate remained stable at 59.4%, while the activity rate saw a minor decline from 64.6% to 64.5%. It was President Luis Lacalle Pou's last month in office. Yamandú Orsi was sworn in on March 1.

He made those remarks alongside former fellow Uruguayan Presidents Julio María Sanguinetti and Luis Alberto Lacalle Herrera, together with the incumbent Yamandú Orsi, during a Colorado Party ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the South American country's return to democratic rule. Luis Lacalle Pou, who completed his term last month, made a video appearance while relatives of the late former Presidents Jorge Batlle and Tabaré Vázquez were presented with a distinction.
