    Eastern Falkland Plateau to be surveyed by state of the art scientific research vessel

    The RRS Discovery arrived on Tuesday in Chile's extreme south port of Punta Arenas in advance of her next research expedition, to undertake seismic survey and piston coring operations in the eastern Falkland Plateau region of the Sub-Antarctic Southwest Atlantic Ocean.

    LGBTI Diversity Flag hoisted in Chilean city of Punta Arenas

    “What happened on Wednesday is a tremendous milestone that Punta Arenas,” Iguales Foundation president Pi said.

    The diversity flag was hoisted Wednesday on Mount La Cruz in Punta Arenas, Chile's southernmost city, as part of the celebration of the International Gay Pride Day (LGBTI) by the Iguales Foundation. Similar ceremonies were held all over the world, including the Magallanes Region Government House, over 2,000 kilometers south of Santiago.

    Punta Arenas plans to seat a major Antarctica scientific research hub

    Governor Jorge Flies said the objective was for at least 1,000 scientists to settle in the Magellan region capital of Punta Arenas

    Chile will build the International Antarctic Center in the southern city of Punta Arenas, meant to become the entering point to the white continent for the world. The Governor of the Magellan region and the Chilean Antarctic, Jorge Flies stated this week that there were 35 projects developing in his jurisdiction, in three important areas.

    Chilen Navy operating from Punta Arenas rescues Australian yacht skipper

    Solo skipper Shane Freeman abandoned the Mushka yacht which has been scuttled to prevent a hazard to navigation, after being rescued by a Chilean Navy sea

    The Chilean Navy rescued 61-year-old Australian skipper Shane Freeman after his yacht Mushka was knocked down and dismasted 300 nautical miles west of Chile. The Australian was on his way to the Sunday Times Golden Globe race’s start line in the UK in his Tradewind 35 class yacht when the incident happened on 18 February 2017.

    DAP Airways opens summer link between Punta Arenas and Ushuaia

    The first symbolic flight with a BAE 146-200 lands in Ushuaia and is received with the friendly arch of rain at the airport

    Chilean privately owned DAP Airways inaugurated this week the link between Punta Arenas, extreme south of Chile and Ushuaia, capital of Argentine Tierra del Fuego, a flexible commercial service that includes two weekly flights during the summer season and with the main purpose of increasing connectivity in the region and favoring tourism.

    Insignia marks the official beginning of the cruise season for Punta Arenas

    Insignia arrived with 684 passengers and a crew of 400, after undergoing a multimillion-dollar upgrading.

    With the arrival this Monday of M/V Insignia to Punta Arenas in the extreme south of Chile, and capital of the Magallanes region has officially declared opened the 2016/17 cruise season. It is estimated that 102.000 tourists will be visiting the region, although the number of vessel calls will drop drastically from 121 to 86.

    Falkland Islands and Punta Arenas interested in increasing links and cooperation

    A delegation from the UK embassy in Chile and a member from the Falklands Legislative Assembly met in Punta Arenas with the Magallanes region finance minister Christian Garcia to increase science and education cooperation links and promote people and economic exchanges.     The 2016//17 cruise season for the Magallanes region in the extreme south of Chile will see a drop in the number of calls, from 121 to 86, of which 83 in Punta Arenas and 3 in Puerto Natales, according to the schedule published by Punta Arenas port authority, Austral Port Company, EPA, website.
