    Busy cruise visitors week for Ushuaia: 20.000 landed during January

    Thursday will see the arrival of “Emerald Princess” with 3.000 visitors and 1.300 crew members. She is also on her third cruise calling Ushuaia this 2017/18 season.

    Ushuaia in the extreme south of Argentina is experiencing one of the busiest weeks of the current cruise season with six vessels and thousands of visitors calling at the capital of Tierra del Fuego. This includes the “Emerald Princess”, which is the largest to visit the End of the World city and will be completing its third call this season.

    Falklands Meat Company renovated including a new business manager

    FIMCo identified a number of business and technical issues that needed addressing to improve the profitability of the Company

    The Falkland Islands Meat Company (FIMCo) has announced the appointment of their new Business Improvement Manager. Michael Ledwith is to start this month on a new full-time contract, tasked with implementing change at the Sand Bay plant, “bringing peak performance through operational efficiency and productivity in the business,” according to information from FIMCo.

    South Georgia celebrated on 17 January “Possession Day”

    On 17th January 1775 a small party of men landed on a beach beneath snowy peaks and tumbling glaciers. In charge was an officer by the name of James Cook; the British Flag was planted, a volley of musket shot was fired, and the land was claimed for His Britannic Majesty. Cook named the bay in which he landed Possession Bay. On the 17th January 2018 (and every year) South Georgia marked ‘Possession Day’ with a bank holiday and reception at Government House.

    Falklands holds consultation on Premier Oil environmental impact statement

    The offshore Sea Lion oilfield, located in the North Falklands Basin approximately 120 miles to the north of the Falkland Islands.

    An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has been submitted to the Falkland Islands Government by Premier Oil Exploration and Production Limited. The EIS covers the proposed development activity for Phase 1 of the offshore Sea Lion oilfield, located in the North Falklands Basin approximately 120 miles to the north of the Falkland Islands.

    Falklands ecosystem documented in National Geographic February

    Paul Nicklen: “There seems to be this balance of people, sheep, agriculture, fishing, and really abundant wildlife and nature”.

    The National Geographic February 2018 will document the Falkland Islands' diverse ecosystem by wildlife photographer Paul Nicklen. The piece points out that for every permanent resident in the Falklands there are 167 sheep, but also the Islands have 65 species of birds, along marine mammals in the surrounding ecosystem.

    Three vessels and Russia's ROV continue search for ARA San Juan, missing since two months

    ”ARA Islas Malvinas has left the naval base of Ushuaia to join the search and is carrying on board the Russian ROV (remotely operated vessel) Panther Plus”

    Argentine navy ARA Islas Malvinas, a vessel normally assigned to patrolling duties in the southern seas and supplying Argentine scientific bases and stations in Antarctica has joined the search for the submarine ARA San Juan with a crew of 44, which has gone missing for two months, since November 15, in the South Atlantic.
