The Chilean TAG service (an electronic toll road payment system) has been implemented in Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez airport in the Pudahuel borough, thus making it easier to enter and leave the international airport.

The new system will read the TAG device on passing automobiles, with fees added to directly to the user’s Costanera Norte monthly bill. Cars passing through the new “Telepass” detectors must be going at a velocity no greater than ten kilometres per hour.

The TAG system currently covers the Costanera Norte and Autopista Central highways within Santiago.

The new service is designed for frequent airport visitors. The trial period has been implemented on 3,000 of the most regular visitors. This number will be increased weekly as other regular visitors are listed.

Those visitors who are not classified by Costanera Norte as frequent will still have to pay the US $0.70 manually.

There are currently 15,000 cars entering the airport on a daily basis with authorized taxi’s make up 15-20% of the total.
