Mar 17th, 2011 - 02:14 pm - Link - Report abuse 0a number of things need sorting however:
(i) Argentinian pen-husbandry does not yet meet EU standards,
(ii) Argentinian slaughter, butchery & packing do not yet meet EU standards
(iii) Argentina needs to manage Foot & Mouth Disease and Blue Tongue more effectively, both by slaughter programmes and/or by immunisation programmes
(iv) Argentina needs investment in livestock farming to produce quantities needed. Decline of Argentine production (20% per year) does not give buyers confidence in supply continuity
(v) The price the UK (EU) buys at will have to reflect the price paid to UK & EU producers because deals with Mercosur countries will not come to fruition if they destroy EU livestock profitability.
This is not theft, Martin, it is negotiation.
