The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly has eight members once again. Mike Summers, a veteran of Falklands’ affairs was sworn in as an MLA at an official ceremony held at Government House this Monday morning.

“Sweet” sugar futures until the northern hemisphere crop is harvested

Sugar supplies will remain limited until the 2012-13 harvest begins in top producer Brazil, broker FCStone do Brasil said citing futures traded in New York. The rise in sugar price helped push the FAO Food Price Index to 234 points in June, which is 39% higher than a year ago.

China’s trade surplus soars in June with imports growth slowing down

China's trade surplus widened more than expected to 22.3 billion US dollars in June, the highest level in seven months, as imports grew at the slowest pace since 2009. The surplus was 13.1 billion USD the previous month and 20 billion USD a year earlier.

Airline industry test second generation bio-fuels from algae to coconut oil

After decades of waiting, commercial airlines have been given the go-ahead to use fuel made from algae, wood chips and other plants with obscure names. Test flights in recent years by Continental, Japan Airlines and Virgin Atlantic have shown that planes can fly on everything from coconut oil to jatropha, a plant that grows in the tropics.
