Regrettably, being much like argieland in its refusal to consider “the people”, the EU demanded that animal health controls were reduced. Look at the spread of this virus. Mediterranean, then northern Europe and now Britain. Poor animal health and veterinary controls in Europe!

The foot and mouth virus entered Argentina with a Shorthorn bull named 'Tarquin' that was imported from England in the 1890's and spread along most of Southamerica, killing hundreds of thousands of native cattle whose origins were the animals brought by the Spanish conquerors when a huge wedge of the continent was under their rule.

With no fences to hold them, cattle soon turned wild and reproduced itself by the millions, especially in Argentina. Veterinaries of the time weren't aware of the existence of viruses, lest how these would attack, mutate and disseminate, so the losses were fantastic until mid 20th century when vaccination - even with experimental vaccines - was found useful firstly to cut down on infection and, later on when vaccines were perfected, to cut down also on propagation.

By the way, Newcastle in poultry and both bluetongue and madcow in cattled and sheep, were exclusively originated in Europe, and exported therefrom to other countries in the same way that foot & mouth was 150 years before.

    Cheers!
