Chile's newly merged regional carrier LATAM Airlines said on Monday it would spend 7.87 billion dollars on its fleet through 2014. The airline aims to have a 359-strong fleet by 2014, up from the 319 planes projected for this year. Read full article
This is an amazing story really and it is sad that none of the hard line national socialists will have the grace to recognise the achievements. But put this in context. In Europe and South America, airlines (and other businesses) have long complained that US businesses have a natural advantage because of their access to the massive internal US market – which is true and is why Mercosur want to replicate a SA equivalent of that internal market.
But here in Chile we have ploughed our own furrow. We haven’t looked to be part of something bigger, we have worked hard to beat them at their game. (We work more hours in the day than any country except Singapur – I think that would drop if you discounted the 2 daily visits to the “cafe con piernas” ).
In our four main industries: mining, forestry, fish farming and viticulture our domestic businesses have grown to be as big (and sometimes bigger) than their US/European rivals. Now our little LAN, already operating the best domestic routes in Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, has swallowed up TAM and become the second largest airline in the world. As SA grows at 4% LAN will only grow, and unlike US, European and Argie flag carriers it doesn’t require tax payer monies to be pumped in to it.
There are tough decisions to be made now re secondary education and reducing inequality, but I know, like so much else, we can do it right – our way.
A quien madruga Dios le ayuda.
¡Viva Chile mierda!
Fido,
Lan has bought out TAM share holders, that is usually referred to as a takeover, but it matters not, if you want to call it a merger that is fine. I think AF / KLM was a mutual share swap.
The good news is that it is good for both LAN and TAM. TAM will benefit from the cash injection and LAN from increased access to Brazilian routes. Both will continue to operate as separate brands.
From a Brazilian point of view, there is nothing to worry about. TAM has already been overtaken by other domestic Brazilian operators so you can still fly with a non Chilean airline if you prefer.
@ Hermano Think,
Mi linda Violeta was right and we have indeed been going carefully over the stones quietly for the past 2 decades...and it is paying off. Lan’s success is emblematic of the way forward, not just for us...don’t let them stifle your enterprise. “Podrán cortar todas las flores, pero nunca detendrán la primavera.” We are in spring, rejoice!
wow, i'm being censored here. I cannot type the other words for Hispanics here. Anyway..what i typed was pure and simple. This MERGER is similar like Air France and KLM. You don't have to think about it if you do your homework. both still work independently and under their own label and have veto power. as far as I know..Brazilian law forbids to have more than 20% of Brazilian companies and second (you can find all in the latam press release info online before the Merger). For LAN it means only more access to main cities like Sao Paulo and Rio, but not domestic what is still Brazil TAM plus they would never allowed to be ruled by group of (insecured as Manclown who's ego is shrinking, each time he types a comment here to make Chile look powerful or whatever, what is it's not and never will) Chileans who I doubt understand one of the fastest growing market in the world, Brazil. Third Lan and TAM are excellent airlines. Its a great combination Merger.
That´s the difference between a good market ruled policy and a bad (common) state ruled policy......
Forynately, for us, Chile has taken care of the deepening of the policies in the last leftist Gvts. and we have changed to a middle-right wing Gvt. that has been leading our country to a succesful development, the best in the region, so our companies can search for new business abroad......
Well, one of the minds leading the success of LAN, now LATAM, has been our present President, Mr. Piñera who has applied national policies of economic, social and institutionals looking for just the welfare of the country......while others neighbors countries are falling down ot the garbage can bottom......
Back in time, thanks to a visionary president that took the country broken in all the aspects, and with patriotism, smart mind and strength leaded us to change our old vision of the state duty in a closed doors enviroment, to jumps us to an open doors country where the entrepreuner have space to reach its goals.....Starting on last mid century as a small debtor closed economy now Chile has reached the category of bigger creditor open economy...
Fido,
The takeover deal consisted of TAM being delisted from the stock exchange. There is no issue with the 20% ownership law you mention, because TAM has ceased to be a listed entity in Brazil. All TAM shares were swapped for shares in the new airline, LATAM SA, which is headquartered in Santiago and listed on the Santiago stock exchange.
Fido, it cost LAN 2.7 billion dollars to finalize the takeover and once the deal was done it owned TAM's 11.99 billion debt. Their debt was a little high but LAN will soon turn it around. The quality of management at LAN will soon make this company investment grade and all their passengers will benefit from it. Good one LAN.
BTW Condorito's post was exceptional and he nailed the new can do spirit in Chile. IT is all over the place, in Santiago there are apartment towers going up everywhere they pop up like mushrooms. We are going places people, from the poorest Spanish colony to the leader and nothing is going to stop us not even the global slowdown. The experts have even upgraded our growth this difficult year. Our economic model is the only one that is long term. The only one guaranteed to lift the standards of the average Juan it is not a populist, interfering, deficit spending, death spiral. You know @ whom I'm referring to. Take note, there's more good news over the horizon for us.
@16 Nah, Argentine arrogance takes some beating, fact is you are world leaders in it, closely followed with corruption, histeria, indoctrination & falsifying history.
Look on the bright side, at least Arg is world leaders in something :)

Carefull, remember what beautiful Violeta wrote…:
Al pasito por las piedras
cuidao con los juanetes,
que aquí no ha nacido naides
con una estrella en la frente.
Discreto, fino y sencillo
son joyas resplandecientes
con las que el hombre que es hombre
se luce decentemente.
@3That is a great achievement, no wonder the FIs prefer Lan-Chile to AA (Airfix Airlines), but shows how Lan-Chile understand business.

KLM / AF are jointly held by one holding company.
