Four Brazilian manufactured A-29 Super Tucano fighter planes arrived at East Jakarta’s Halim Perdanakusuma Base in the first wave of new “counter-insurgency” turboprop fighters purchased as part of the Indonesian Military’s (TNI) push to modernize its fleet. Read full article

There is no mistaking the sound of there engines, you know what they are when you hear them coming and they really shift. A classic, a true classic and I'm suprised they do not sell more of them.

Wow, the only time the Brit super-patriot bloggers praise South America is when they sell counter insurgency weapons to third world regimes!

Sep 28th, 2012 - 12:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What a load of crap. Did you not read my earlier post, I said we use it as an advanced trainer, a role for which it is superbly designed for. It is a beautiful piece of Brazilian technology and a fine example of their emerging status in the world. Have I not read on these pages numerous S Amercian bloggers singing Brazils praise and holding them up as an example of what can be achieved in the area? Well then, the Tucano is real evidence of that.

Sep 28th, 2012 - 03:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0BK, you are the true RG super patriot blogger.
You defy logic to support CFK, and you cannot allow UK Bloggers to say anything positive about other LATAM countries.
ANY pretext to slag Brits, right? RG
I just think if the article is right that Brazil is selling counter-insurgency equipment to Indonesia that sounds like it could be a bit dodgy. But its good I suppose to see you praising their tech =)
Sep 28th, 2012 - 04:06 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Praise where praise is due, I happen to think that there is no better Turbo propped aircraft available anywhere in the world today. The Brazilians really did a fantastic job in its developement, wish we had grasped the same concept.

Not so long ago I landed at Schipol ……........
Just before arriving at the gate, I looked out and could see about 15 Embraer 190's, neatly lined just outside my window.
I, then, took a look at the plane I was sitting in and it was, indeed ,an Embraer Cityhopper too…
Must admit, I felt proud of my old battered South America.......
A fantastic plane and WTF AG and the mob think they can do better than this is down to AG arrogance.
Sep 28th, 2012 - 08:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0At USD 13M (£8M) for a strong, fast and agile trainer, light fighter, the prats are only deluding themselves.
Perhaps Putridjelly is taking a leaf out of TMBOA book and has bought himself some shares in a engineering company to make the parts. OMG, better keep clear of it when it flies, if it manages to fly that is.
Beautiful

Nearly all of the Netherlands lies below sea level.
With the rising sea levels, the country one day will be underwater.
I f you want to breathe, then you are at an advantage if you are tall as your head can be above the water level. Simple !!!!
Think, older generation was taller ;), but we're still known for being tall people (I myself am 180cm) and small homes. I love my country, but the culture is kinda plain and it's becoming too liberal.

Santos Dumont. Who reads history without being biased will understand that he's the true the father of modern avation.
This an example of Darwinism in action.
Darwin was and is scum, darwinism are for morons.
Anthony FOKKER was an incredible aviation pioneer, shame that the times led to most of his designs being used by the German Imperial Airforce and latterly the Luftwaffe. I think todays FOKKERS are some of the finest short haul aircraft in existance and are beautiful pieces of aviation design, if it looks right, it works right.

A rather contentious statement. Would you care to elucidate ?
Are you a Creationist ? I would venture that you are at odds with the bulk of the scientific community.

Nice video. The song was a very nice touch. Very well skilled display.
The SHORTS Bros. version of the Tucano has given good service in the RAF. The engine noise is quite distinctive and sounds like an angry bee !
I often see them when the are on navigational exercises to Prestwick airport. They do low level flying over the Scottish borders, arrive for lunch and refuelling and then return to their base in Linton on Ouse, in Yorkshire.
As to aerobatic displays, I have been watching these for 60 years - scary thought ! The best I have ever seen was performed by RAF 111 Squadron
the Black Arrows, flying the Hawker Hunter.
I was at the V-Bomber base at RAF Marham in 1958 when they were practicing for the Farnborough Air Show. They looped 22 Hunters in formation, a feat that has never been surpassed. Also, the Hunter was one of the best looking aircraft ever which added to the overall effect of the manoeuvre.
I have seen treble one flying Lightnings, Phantoms and the Tornado F3 but nothing ever equalled this.
I disagree with most of you guys. I think the best trainer/ light attack plane in the world (price & performance) is the new Chinese Hongdu L-15 That Venezuela wants to buy. This very advanced and fast aircraft is the same price as a tucano (US15 million ) but out performs a Argentine A-4AR fightinghawk.

Sep 30th, 2012 - 11:38 am - Link - Report abuse 0I think we should put the proper designation to this plane: Hongdu L-15 Falcon: Lead In Fighter Trainer (LIFT).
This is a real fighter plane, not a basic trainer as the Super Tucano can fulfil.
It would be suicide to put somebody who has done the flying aptitude test in a C172 or whatever into a L-15. They would not be able to cope with a two jet engine supersonic machine, especially getting it back on the floor. Nice plane though.
BTW the price you quoted was the launch price in 2006; I cannot find a current price. Operation costs are going to be commensurate with a twin jet engine fighter (that is what it really is) so fuel and support will be way over the ST. How many countries need that performance?

Sep 30th, 2012 - 12:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I was patroling the APC pan at Akrotiri at 2:00am one very, very windy mediterranian morning, when a treble one lightning went rolling past me. The wind had caused it to jump its chocks, it was moving at a fair rate. A quick radio call later and you should have seen those Flems come running out of the dispersal hut. P.....ssed myself laughing, can still see it 35 years later and I'm still p....ssing myself with laughter. They managed to get it stopped without it being damage, the picture of all those flems, pushing against the undercarriage until it stopped, priceless!!!

Sep 30th, 2012 - 03:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Were you a Rock Ape or RAF police ?
The Lightning was my favourite aircraft. To watch a mass take off was some sight. Afterburners on full, lift off and gear up before the wind tore the forward closing front wheel door off. Speed about 300kts, stick back and an accelerating climb to altitude. Climbing like homesick angel.
The modern stuff is boring by comparison.

Sep 30th, 2012 - 06:19 pm - Link - Report abuse 0When I was about 25, newly married and tanking my Vitesse 6 along a the top of a dyke road towards Yarmouth on our honeymoon, all of a sudden there was the deafening sound of the hounds of hell over us and all I remember seeing was the O/U blazing afterburners of a Phantom.
40 years as if it were yesterday!
