British Prime Minister, David Cameron, visited Rosyth dockyard on Monday to see the work taking place to build the first of the two new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. Read full article
2016 it's not that far away, and the F35 lightening aircraft should be ready for that time too. Then the Prince of Wales should be ready sometime in 2020.
Maybe they will pay a Courtesy call to Port Stanley? just to give the locals a chance to have a look round, and to the give the ship a proper shakedown.
@ 4 LightThink is such an appropriate name. Descriptive of the worth and intelligence of your comments.
On a more positive note, if Everybody can made aircraft carrier.., why doesn't your cesspit have one? Is it not the case that, at one time, you had an aircraft carrier? First there was the Independencia. Bought from the UK! Then there was the Veinticinco de Mayo. Bought from the Netherlands! Both built in Britain! Looks like we can build them and you can't!
@4
Aircraft are expensive things to design and build, so it makes more sense for us to work with other friendly countries to produce them (economics of scale).
Of course, this assumes that other countries are friendly towards you and trust you not to try and steal anything that isn't bolted down (and steal spanners for anything that is).
Perhaps this is why only the Pucara (turboprop, basically 1960s technology) and the Pampa (trainer, knocked together with an engine off of a business jet) are the height of Argentine aerospace technology.
Huge at 280 metres in length, 65,000 tonnes and capable of embarking 40 aircraft, twice the capacity of HMS Illustrious, the aircraft carrier is being constructed at shipyards across the country and assembled at Rosyth.
Yes parts of it are being constructed around the country and assembled at Rosyth, so obviously it can't be as you see it in the picture.
The Chinese haven't been able to make a carrier - they bought an old Soviet era one and modified it. They still have years of testing to go to collect enough data to operate one safely and effectively.
4- Everybody except for Argentina , Brasil, India (although they are now building own) , Australia. They are difficult to build.
But your right aircraft are trickier, that is why BAE and many UK companies are in partnership with the US on the JSF project.
Cant wait for the first carrier to visit the falklands.
yes
a brand new Brist aircrasft carrier, visiting the british falklands,
,,,,,,,,,,,
and CFK and CO will be screaming , ranting , crying ,
oh, and complaining to the UN .
@13 HMS Prince of Wales is due to be ready two years after HMS Queen Elizabeth. Might it be that, when the two carriers visit the Falklands, their combined air wings will be larger than the argie air force? Can we all imagine the two carriers, together with 4 Type 45 destroyers, half-a-dozen frigates and a couple of Astute-class nuclear-propelled submarines sailing into the South Atlantic and conducting exercises? Perhaps the Royal Marines could come along with a couple of amphibious assault ships in order to practice landings? Wouldn't it be nice to see the Challenger 2 main battle tanks of 1st Armoured Division rumbling ashore? Have to be careful. We only have 400. Also practice for 16 Air Assault Brigade! Together with the Voyager MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) aircraft from the RAF bringing in troops and equipment as well as refuelling additional Typhoons on the way from Britain. 48 Typhoons and 3,600 troops in less than 24 hours!
Ingenuity is to make aircrafts by full technology.
That's complete bull.
The USA are the most successful carrier using navy. And even there generals admit the vast majority of aircraft carrier innovations have come from the UK.
I recall one saying exactly We took a lot more from them than they took from us over the years.
Conqueror, I always find your mails quite funny !!!
Looks like we can build them...how many aircraft carrier have you ever build?.. I bet that you, sober, cannot stack not even a couple of cans of beer on top of each other. he he...
I would love to see such fleet making excercises in the South Atlantic Ocean...but I would like to see the bill of such party. Who would pay for it? The Islanders? or the British tax-payers?
@18
British taxpayers of course because we can afford it.
Oh FYI the UK has constructed 41 aircraft carrier over the coarse of around 100 years, second only to the US with 66. Were as Germany has built Zero.
Is the UK going to use this large fleet, with two aircraft carriers, to protect the self-determination of the people of the Chaggos Island against any evil country?
Anyway, please, do not worry about my words, I just want to have fun (for free) at the expense of a fool as Conqueror.
What makes you think that the Chinese would sell any of these to Argentina? They've just developed them, and the Chinese have never been overly generous regarding weapons, even to their allies. Argentina isn't considered to be an ally by Beijing, because quite frankly just what can Argentina offer China?
They certainly wouldn't 'give' them away, they'd want cash in dollars no peso's.
Besides every carrier group has a defensive ring. The Type 45 can shoot anything down, even a Chinese missile fired from 900 miles away.
Can we use this fleet to win a new Empire?
Argentina would be a good start!
Somewhere to test our equipment, you know like the Germans did in Spain in 1937
