The Argentine Coast Guard arrested on Christmas after fining some intimidatory shots, two Chinese flagged jiggers illegally fishing in Argentina’s South Atlantic Economic Exclusive Zone off the Chubut province coast, according to an official report released Wednesday. Read full article

Dec 27th, 2012 - 09:21 am - Link - Report abuse 0Friends look out for each other, they're not supposed to steal from each other or fire shots at each other. lol
Off the coast of Chubut, you say? mmmmmmmmmmmm
Maybe the Chinese were trying to kidnap señor Think!
If these vessels were 400 Km from the Argentine coast, they were outside the territorial waters. Beijing will not be happy with the Mad Bitch for arresting two of their fishing vessels and Buenos Aires can expect to have their ambassador given a dressing down for this.
Dec 27th, 2012 - 10:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0I doubt that Argentina will get any further support from China over the Falkland Islands now. Who knows, maybe next time it will be China seeking a set of exploration licenses from the FIG to look for oil.
Like all bullies Argentina picked on the wrong person to annoy and there will be a reckoning for this.

Dec 27th, 2012 - 10:47 am - Link - Report abuse 0Read the story again. It didn't say 400km off the coast.
2 and 3 agree - clarification is needed here as approx 400km - is approx 235 miles - and that is 30 plus miles outside an EEZ - so approximate is somewhat vague to say the least - we need one side or the other to state exactly - a very very simple operation with todays navigation equipment!
Dec 27th, 2012 - 10:56 am - Link - Report abuse 0International EEZ is 200 nautical miles (321 km) or if there is a continental shelf up to 350 nautical miles (563km). If Argentina is claiming to the continental shelf in this area, then 400 km could be within its EEZ, if the continental shelf extends that far.

The article says ...were caught red-handed approximately 400 kilometres from Puerto Madryn... not approximately 400 kilometers from the Argentine coast.
Dec 27th, 2012 - 01:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Presumably it was within Argentine territorial waters SE of Madryn and somewhat off Comodoro Rivadavia to where the jiggers were escorted.
Well done Prefectura Naval, if the Chinese government support illegal fishing they are no friend of anyone!!!!!!!
So, one of Argentinas's great mates caught cheating it.
Dec 27th, 2012 - 02:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What's next, a Syrian. Iranian or Venezuelan vessel?
I thought Argentina wanted the squid fished out to blockade the Falkland Islands fisheries, regardless of the consequences to sustainable fish stocks?
However, if the ship was illegally fishing I'm not condoning it.
You can be certain that the UK won't be doing any illegal fishing in the South Atlantic.
At least the jiggers will provide business for the Argentine port missing a few cruise liners, even if involuntary.

Dec 27th, 2012 - 02:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0How do you know they didn't think these WERE cruise vessels!
I mean, there are probably better than anything AG can offer.

Another own goal. Whoops!
Dec 27th, 2012 - 04:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Why didnt the Chinese radio operators reply? Mebbe they they were off duty and had gone for a thompson

Dec 28th, 2012 - 07:12 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Lol! In which case, when they go in port the RG dockers will be warning the ships about not docking in the Falklands.
Perhaps RG will impound these and convert them into 'luxury' liners.
Well, it seems Cristina's Argentina is perfectly capable of standing up to China after all, when the need arises, contrary to the claims of the haters on here...
Dec 31st, 2012 - 01:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Well she has certainly jiggered any good relations and may have even burnt her boats
