Representatives from several Latinamerican and Caribbean countries before the Organization of American States recognized on Wednesday Nicolas Maduro as elected president of Venezuela. Disclaimer & comment rulesStrange. Why do these states feel the need to trumpet their support for the result of an internal, domestic matter before an international organisation? Is the ground feeling shaky?

International observers report no problems with the vote. Calling for a recount is merely a thinly veiled way to incite violence against the democratically elected government. The peoples of truly democratic Latin American countries acknowledge the election because there is no reason to doubt it.
