Brazil and Uruguay want to speed a trade agreement with the European Union but without abandoning Mercosur, and making it clear that they are willing to advance at “a different speed” than the rest of the group’s members, revealed a reliable source from the government of President Jose Mujica in Montevideo. Aug 12th, 2013 - 07:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0All are waking up to the straight jacket that Mercosur is.
This contrasts with Argentina’s Cristina Fernandez that is involved in a trade policy clearly protectionist and is in no rush to reach an agreement with the Europeans. But Brazil and Uruguay are basing their strategy in the ‘two speeds’ policy to as to agree with the EU and not break links with the rest of Mercosur partners.
Aug 12th, 2013 - 07:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Time to dump KFC regime Argentina it's no longer worth the time, energy or tantrums. Call it ' two speeds' if you will.
We all know what the sound of a WC flush sounds like. Be brave and pull the chain.
I think Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay are just waiting for the end of CFK. They know it is coming and are just biding their time.

Aug 12th, 2013 - 08:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Best can't be said, it's almost factual. What's really interesting, it's what going to happen to the Mercosur after the end of the CFK.
Trade is good, but I don't like Katia Abreu selling out like Afif. If we didn't have a clear and organized opposition before, now we are becoming more like Argenigg@ or even Cubazuela, where you have to chose between different means for the same end.
Aug 12th, 2013 - 10:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0CFK, no CFK, KFC, RFK, ... no matter who's in charge, mark my words:
Aug 13th, 2013 - 12:29 am - Link - Report abuse 0THERE WILL NEVER be free trade between Argentina and Europe/United States/Mexico/Pacific/Brazil, etc. NEVER.
Yes, #4
Aug 13th, 2013 - 04:51 am - Link - Report abuse 0it will be interesting to see if post-Kirchner Arg. packs with Br. Ur. and Pa. or packs with Ve.
It is good to see that SOMEBODY in Mercosur is talking about SPEED.
THERE WILL NEVER be free trade between Argentina and Europe/United States/Mexico/Pacific/Brazil, etc. NEVER.
Aug 13th, 2013 - 04:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0Good! No one is really clamouring for more soy!
Or is there something else that Argentina produces?
I agree with the two speed thinggy. One slow, and the other one even slower.
Aug 13th, 2013 - 05:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0Until Europe gives up their Agricultural protectionism, heck, lets go for slowest...
Let's be clear. Brazil and Uruguay must be made to pay for their illegitimate actions as part of mercosur. This is a time for principles to come first. Of course, principles are not the EU's strong suit. Mercosur wants to export? Fine. How little should Europe pay? This is no time to help the latino bastards. Time to do the sensible thing and screw them!

I imagine you have some sort of expectations. Surely you wish them to be older than 12.
At least.
No?
@11 You're a sick puppy.
Aug 13th, 2013 - 08:13 am - Link - Report abuse 0The reason you lot know nothing about Che is because your history teachers couldn't come up with enough dirt to throw at him, so they decided to leave him out of your classrooms altogether...
Aug 13th, 2013 - 08:29 am - Link - Report abuse 0@13 Oh joy, another topic to add to your victimisation list. The self-pity party for people like you never ends does it? ;)

Aug 13th, 2013 - 10:19 am - Link - Report abuse 0I guess that's one more thing than Australia? (except for the halcyon days of Kangoroo meat illegal exports.)
Does anyone think anything will happen before the EU trade options lapse?
Aug 13th, 2013 - 02:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0There is some thought as to who will side with who when Mercosur collapses.
The one thing I am fairly certain of is that Argentina cannot afford NOT to stick with Ven. They owe too much money for oil already burnt and need them for oil yet to come.
Everything else is irrelevant.

Aug 13th, 2013 - 08:27 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I think that Brazil and Uruguay will try to salvage and advance their own FTA. Stevie doesn't like the sound of it because he blindly devalues anything that doesn't involve Argentina, but read my post on this related article:
http://en.mercopress.com/2013/08/12/eu-confirms-no-block-to-individual-mercosur-member-trade-negotiation-has-been-requested
Argentina will stick with Venezuela and with Bolivia now joining too they will keep their economies closed as much as possible.
While I don't think Mercosur will collapse, I think that it will lose relevance for some members. There is too much prestige and history for Brazil to walk away from Mercosur but it will shift its priorities.
As my posts on the other thread show, Colombia and Peru while part of their own trade group - Andean Community - continued with their own FTA outside the group to gain what they desired.
Considering the major lack of trade integration within Mercosur; Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil will probably keep a foot in that camp while charting their own prosperity outside the group too.
Argentina and Venezuela won't kick up too much of a fuss as they won't want Mercosur to collapse. They will kick and scream but will adjust to the reality that there is nothing they can do to stop members signing individual FTAs.
Mercosur is one of the few organisations that Argentina belongs to where it can sit almost at the head of the table and be treated as a major player.
So Brazil and Uruguay are diplomatically extricating, Paraguay is undiplomatically extricating, and Chile.belongs to the Pacific Alliance. Does Arg have any close friends anymore?

They have a new bestie - Spain!
Aug 14th, 2013 - 07:24 pm - Link - Report abuse 0So Iran, North Korea, Spain and Argentina! Not an axis of evil but pretty much an axis of low growth, poverty, corruption and economic mismanagement.
