    Ah my first ship and a fine ship she is! :)

    A very sophisticated warship is Richmond and any '23. Also, she's a nice ship to serve on compared to some of the older ships like the '42's!

    Have a good trip Richmond!

    We should have gone Antarctica, and although based at Simons town (the last RN ship officially to use that base) HMS Bigbury Bay spent most if its time on the upper East African Coast and the Red Sea...Very Old Navy; not a bit like the splendid modern ships of today. Still it had its moments.

    Based on her history, Richmond appears to be a very capable vessel and, according to the specs, is now exceptionally well-armed. Sea Wolf, Harpoon and Sting Ray systems plus a full complement of guns (11 apparently), together with a helicopter with more missile and/or torpedo systems. My only reservation, as with all current RN destroyers and frigates, is the lack of armament to the rear. It seems remarkably thoughtless of the designers not to have fully capable armament to protect the hangar and the helicopter. Still, RN vessels are usually ATTACKING, so perhaps it doesn't matter too much!

    Type 42”s were sleek grey war canoes, FAF, governed to 40 nothing came close speed wise, lovely bit of kit. Falklands patrol 1989 on HMS Newcastle we steamed down at full speed from Pompey via fuel stops at gib, Dakar, and ascension because Monkey Menum said he'd retake the Falklands if he won the election, oh dear.

    @5
    “ Monkey Menum said he'd retake the Falklands if he won the election, oh dear.”

    He said the Falklands would be Argentine by 2000.

    A tad optimistic.

    @7 Pete to qoute the indipendant 1995

    Quite a turn-around from 1988, when Mr Menem, campaigning for the presidency for the first time, told Argentines: “I don't know how much blood we'll have to spill but our territory will once again return to the Argentinian people.”

    We were heading off to the gulf for 6 months deployment and changed course heading south full speed because of Monkeys claim . It was well before the 2000 soft stuff.

    @
    “I don't know how much blood we'll have to spill”

    Meaning' I don't know how much blood you'll (all Argentines except Menem) have to spill.....'.

    I don't really think that Monkey Menem had much more intention of venturing any nearer the Islands (1000 miles away) than Galteiri had.

    Latin macho bullshit.
