HMS Richmond was on patrol in the South Georgia Maritime Zone at the end of September and came to anchor off Hope Point on the 27th for a three-day visit, reports the September edition of the South Georgia Newsletter.

The Type 23 frigate is currently on a 7-month Atlantic patrol providing on-going protection and reassurance to British interests within the region. A small party from HMS Richmond went ashore for a dinner hosted by the GSGSSI Government Officers.

The South Atlantic Patrol has 185 personnel on board most of whom were able to get ashore over the next two days. The Naval Chaplin (known by naval tradition as ‘The Bish’) held a service in the Grytviken church on both mornings.

Many of the sailors enjoyed a spot of sledging, and most were fortunate to see a penguin or two on the beach. KEP personnel were glad to accompany groups on a longer walk to Penguin River on both days, though those ashore on the Sunday were blessed with very much better weather than the snow and wind experienced the day before.

A Mountain Leader working at the military outdoor adventure facility at Stanley, Falklands, was aboard HMS Richmond as a guest, and led a small adventurous group which included the ship’s captain, Commander Robert Pedre, up Brown Mountain to enjoy magnificent views from the top.

Ah my first ship and a fine ship she is! :)

A very sophisticated warship is Richmond and any '23. Also, she's a nice ship to serve on compared to some of the older ships like the '42's!

    Have a good trip Richmond!

We should have gone Antarctica, and although based at Simons town (the last RN ship officially to use that base) HMS Bigbury Bay spent most if its time on the upper East African Coast and the Red Sea...Very Old Navy; not a bit like the splendid modern ships of today. Still it had its moments.
