The 50,000 square kilometers of maritime space Peru gained from the favorable ruling by the International Court of Justice in The Hague, on the border dispute with Chile, have a potential fishing activity that includes 200,000 tons of Peruvian squid, according to the country's Sea Institute, (Imarpe).
We have caught 14,500 tons of small squid, but hopefully there are between 80,000 and 200,000 tons of squid only in that area. This is interesting news for fishermen in the south area of the country, said the chairman of the board of Imarpe, Germán Vásquez.
In addition to the jumbo flying squid (Dosidicus gigas), researchers from Imarpe identified 1.2 million tons of vinciguerria, a fish that is similar to the anchovy. And it was highlighted that the density of this resource is higher than that of the anchovies in a similar area.
Other species found in the area include the yellow-fin tuna, the dolphin-fish or mahi mahi, and the swordfish, which are species that could be exploited both in an artisanal and industrial way.
Vázquez said there are artisanal fishing vessels that can reach this new maritime zone, but Imarpe suggests that the association is to encourage so that fishermen can buy bigger scale boats and can make the most of these fisheries resources. He pointed out that a longliner can remain for four consecutive months in the sea while artisanal vessels can do so for four days. (FIS).-

Mar 27th, 2014 - 06:27 pm 0So in just over 2 months they have taken 14,500 of undersized squid... just under 10% of what they say is there.
All gone in under 2 years then.... they must be using advisors from the Argentinian Ministry of Conservation..
