Uruguay promulgated the bill which incorporates Bolivia as the latest member of Mercosur, the South American group made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. The incorporation of Bolivia should help with the consolidation of a Mercosur Atlantic-Pacific corridor across South America. Read full article

    Not sure how it is consolidating a Pacific Ocean corridor when poor Bolivia is landlocked.

    I would like to know the source of this article. If this act consolidates the Atlantic-Pacific route according to anyone in the officialdom of mercosur, then it is recognition of the fact that Bolivia has free port access via Chile.

    Ironically the free access Bolivia enjoys to our ports is in great contrast to the problematic movement of goods via Mercosur.

    Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Poor Paraguay, economically floating away from its past, but tied to four bricks.

    How is Bolivia's membership supposed to benefit the other members ??
    Can only see this happening if the Bolivians reduce the price of their natural gas...
    Strange that there is no mention of Bolivia's other main export ....cocaine......but that's coming in already, taxfree...

    @6 Lower tariffs, free trade (well, sort of), less checks on borders. Still Bolivia isn't as f*cked up as Venezuela is so it is nice to see them in Mercosur.

    “the free access Bolivia enjoys to our ports”

    This doesn't mean that all Mercosur countries will be able to take advantage of Bolivia's free access to the Pacific through Chile for their exports, does it?

    Does Argentina also currently have free access through Chile?

    @7,
    I'm aware that trade agreements are supposed to, amongst other things, lower tariffs, and on principle it makes sense that neighbouring countries be integrated tradewise, however just hope that Bolivia is not going to be another Argentina, dragging the other members down the drain and trying to change the rules in the middle of the game.
    And as far as the borders checks are concerned, these are very lax, anything comes over the border (into Brazil), especially illegal immigrants.

    8 @ Argentina has access to the Pacific through Chilean coast under a current free trade agreement between both countries.......And Chile is an associated member of Mercosur too, don´t forget it.....

    Anyway, both treaties are not possible to be compared because one is mainly political (Mercosur) and the other is only economic (PA)......
