The Chilean navy is deploying two vessels to contain possible fuel leaks, in the area where a Navimag ferry on Monday morning struck a group of rocks and is half sunk and half resting on a beach. Read full article
Being a boat owner I can sympathise. All sorts of crap can happen when you least expect it. However a captain of a vessel worth 7 million quid should not be hitting rocks that have been there for thousands of years. If you see rocks yesterday you should expect them to be there tomorrow.
I assume he either lost power or was totally negligent.
Paso Kirke is a very skinny bit and that is an extremely old ship... almost 40yo.... equipment failutre most likely.
Maybe cost 7 mill to build...but she only had scrap value before this accident.
Oh, and some ships are just born unlucky... she had two sisters, one rolled over and sank at Jeddah, the other sank in the Med.
@6 are you sure you weren't on the previous Amadeo which was broken up in Pto Montt in 2003/4? They have only had this one about 6 years.
If Navimag bought some decent new ferries they would have a good tourist trade on that run. I'm always recvommending Via Australis/Mare Australis to people who want to cruise those waters..OK they are primarily freight ferries Navimag ferries are a bit rough.

I stand corrected. On my trip, I thought we had been informed our vessel had been switched from the Puerto Natales route.
Years later I took the Skorpios III
Looks like a tough salvage.

Wow, incredible, I actually rode this very ship from Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt a couple of years ago. What a shame to hear.
