Chile's GDP grew at its weakest pace since 2009 in the second quarter as investment waned and a previously rapid expansion in consumer spending slowed, central bank data showed. The economy grew 1.9% in the second quarter compared with a year ago, or a seasonally adjusted 0.2% compared with the first quarter. Read full article

    The cooling started during the presidential campaign when Bachelet said “tax reform”.

    it's not Bachelet's fault, I mean... back in in 2009 who was president?

    Oh wait...

    A failed state at the border and nobody gets what that means. People here are underestimating Argentina's fallout in Brazil and then here. Everyone in lala land. Brazilians shopping in NYC and Miami while Dilma plans for their currency clampdown after elections.

    Why cant Chile rely on its new bestest buddy Argentina?

    Oh I see you need British money and investment to support your economy? Then say “Chile was right to support the UK during the Falklands War.”

    T'is easy.

    @4. Have to admit that I was thinking exactly the same thing.

    Shouldn't bother, guys. The Falkland Islands might be a little touchy about the “friends” of argieland. I doubt they'll be too keen on potential spies and saboteurs.

    Condorito,
    Right on the mark. Everyone I know became very wary about investment, especially new tax laws regarding property sales.

    @BioBio
    Beside the impact of the Chinese slow down (+ global slow down) exacerbated by a poorly timed decision to reform the tax system, the fallout from Argieland is small. I don't know what its like where you live, but here in the glorious Provincia de Elqui there is a steady increase in the number of Argie immigrants. Most noticeably working in cafes and bars.

    @4 brasher
    “Why cant Chile rely on its new bestest buddy Argentina?”
    Because to rely economically on a country like Argentina would be insane.

    “Oh I see you need British money and investment to support your economy? ”

    Where did you “see” that? The UK, like most countries in the world, is considered a valuable trading partner of ours. We have a trade balance with the UK that runs significantly in our favour.

    “Chile was right to support the UK during the Falklands War.”

    I have met few educated people who think otherwise. Don't be misled by the comments of one man. When I hear a UK minister make pro-European remarks, I don't jump to the conclusion that Brits are pro-European.

    @5 Conq
    Why do you think the UK works hard to maintain good relations with Chile? Go on think, think, you can do it.

    @ManRod / Chicureo
    Both the those countercyclical buffers and Bachelet have fattened up and are ready for deployment. She is going to have to work for it this time round.
