So why are shrimp imported from Chile? The other day at Wal-Mart itsy bitsy tiny shrimp were $375 pesos per kilo. That's about $50. I bought shrimp in Canada (in Winnipeg which is about as far from the ocean as you can get) for $9 a kilo.
Actually a closer reason is probably that they force as much as possible of the seafood catch to go to export to try and raise $$. Then they impose huge import fees and restrictions for importing the shrimp from Chile, to prevent the import from eating up the dollars they took in on the export.
So they manipulate the market while claiming free trade. And the predictable result is shortages and sky-high prices...
