UK ambassador in Chile Fiona Clouder underlined the values and qualities of the Royal Navy and Chilean Navy during a reception on HMS Dragon, which called at Valparaíso for the week long Exponaval 2014, considered the most important naval, maritime and ports' exhibition in the southern hemisphere.

“It has been a wonderful week here at Exponaval, where the Chilean Navy has hosted an excellent international exhibition, bringing together representatives from many different countries, showcasing advanced technologies and also encouraging all of us to think about the challenges for navies, and for the maritime industry, of energy efficiency and environmental impacts” said ambassador Clouder.

“What unites all is the sea”, said the ambassador at the retribution reception for Chilean authorities and naval officials recalling her ancestors' links to the sea, and after reciting some quotes from poet laureate John Masefield “Sea Fever”, stressed the roles played by navies in protecting shipping and keeping the seas safe.

“In thinking about the sea, let us remember all that our navies do to protect our shipping, deal with piracy, keep us safe, and address security threats, including those who make the ultimate sacrifice. This week we remembered those who lost their lives at the Battle of Coronel, which was the first naval engagement of the First World War, and which took place off the coast of Chile”.

Finally ambassador Clouder made a brief mention to the fact that Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon is one of the most modern vessels of the Royal Navy and underscored the shared values and qualities of the RN and the Chilean navy.

“Tonight we are on a beautiful ship, sleek in design, advanced in its technology. But what struck me are also the values of her crew - commitment, courage, discipline, respect, integrity and loyalty. Qualities also of the Chilean Navy. And so tonight, I hope that all of us will join in thanking the Chilean Navy for welcoming us to Exponaval, and in celebrating all those who serve the sea”.

HMS Dragon is currently on Atlantic Patrol Tasking South replacing HMS Iron Duke which is on the last leg of her return to Portsmouth.
