The biggest ship designed exclusively for Britain, Britannia called at Gibraltar on Tuesday and is due to return for a formal inaugural call on March 17. The vessel is P&O Cruises latest “modern classic”, heralding what it calls a new era of holiday choice.

“We are honored and proud that Her Majesty will name Britannia almost 20 years after she named the P&O Cruises ship Oriana. Britannia, a ship for the nation, will be the embodiment of contemporary Britain, and with her Union Jack livery she will fly the flag for Britain across the Globe.” Carnival UK chairman, David Dingle.

Britannia’ has a historical resonance for P&O Cruises, as two previous ships connected to the company have held this prestigious name. The first entered service in 1835 for the General Steam Navigation Company (which later became The Peninsular Steam Navigation Company) whilst the second entered service in 1887 to mark the Golden Jubilee of both Queen Victoria and P&O itself.

Arriving in spring 2015, Britannia will represent the very best of the best! The largest cruise ship built exclusively for Britain, she will combine signature P&O Cruises features with the very latest innovations in dining, entertainment and modern design.

Britannia embraces a bold 94 meter Union Flag on her bow displaying the longest version of the Flag anywhere in the world. Her other distinctive features include blue funnels carrying an illuminated rising sun motif which depicts the Oriental part of the Peninsular and Oriental (P&O) name on the company’s Coat of Arms.

Captain Paul Brown was the lucky man chosen to steer 141,000-ton Britannia from Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, and indeed, for far-flung shores in 2015.

pauly pauly, as ever completely off subject.

The BRITISH shipyards are rather busy...

”Construction of Queen Elizabeth began in 2009. Her assembly is taking place in the Firth of Forth at Rosyth Dockyard from nine blocks built in six UK shipyards: BAE Systems Surface Ships in Glasgow, Babcock at Appledore, Babcock at Rosyth, A&P Tyne in Hebburn, BAE at Portsmouth and Cammell Laird (flight decks) at Birkenhead”

Of course work now progressing well on HMS The Prince of Wales.
Plus the Nuclear POWERED, Attack Submarines: HMS Audacious, Anson & Agamemnon, with Ajax under contract.

That said Fincantieri are a world class shipbuilder, Biggest in Europe and 4th biggest in the world. The difference between the UK and Argentina, is we can pay for quality.

Currently Fincantieri are also constructing :
Freedom class littoral combat ships for the United States Navy.
Which of course are powered by Rolls-Royce Engines and have a
BAE Systems Mk 110 57 mm main gun.
