Nasdaq index beats its 2000 record, closing at an all time high of 5.056

The United States tech-heavy Nasdaq index has closed at a record high, surpassing a level it last reached in 2000 at the height of the dot com bubble. The index gained 20.89 points to close at 5,056.06, besting the high of 5,048.62 it hit on 10 March 2000.

Chilean volcano third blast forecasted; ashes reach neighboring Argentine provinces

Chile's Calbuco volcano erupted for the first time in over 42 years on Wednesday, creating a remarkable scene of smoke plumes and ash shooting into the sky. A second eruption Wednesday night blasted red-hot rocks skyward and produced an extraordinary display of volcanic lightning. Winds are pushing the ashes north and easr to several neighboring Argentine provinces.

Vatican confirms Pope visit to Cuba on his trip to United States

Leaders of Cuba's Catholic Church expressed joy Wednesday on learning that Pope Francis will visit the island in September amid the budding Vatican-mediated rapprochement between Havana and Washington. Francis will stop in Cuba before his Sept. 23 meeting in the United States with President Barack Obama.

Sunken Russian fishing vessel found at a depth of 2,700m, off Gran Canaria

Russian flagged fishing vessel “Oleg Naydenov” was found by a remotely operated vehicle 15 miles south of Gran Canaria, at a depth of 2,700 meters, Minister of Development Ana Pastor Julian informed. At first, it had been reported that the ship, which sank last week, could be at about 2,400 meters deep.
