The problem started when Texaco left the country way back in the late 80's and PetroEcuador took over the field. Chevron had absolutely nothing to do with the issue. The Ecuadorian government went after them through attrition. Numerous oil companies have leased said area over the years but because TEXACO is no longer and Chevron is sympathetic to environmental issues the became the flavour of choice.... There has already been one case thrown out in the world court citing corruption at the highest levels.

This sounds as though Correa has been watching the Rg's waffle on about the Falklands and attempting something along the same line....

    $9.5 billion???
    Chevron getting off lightly.
Ecuador should sue them in Louisiana. Some good Judges there, who will increase that to at least $100 billion. Look what they did to BP for far less damage.
Who knows evenObama might get involved in the legal process as he did against BP.
Oh hang on isn't Chevron an American Company? - forget it.

I have followed the Ecuador oil issue and the great reserve, the Texaco issue and the Chevron issue for years.
I understand the pollution issue, the government corruption issue and the 'deaths'.
I do not engage with Hollywood and movie stars.

I do understand the stand that Chico Mendez took to protect the Amazon.
I have become saddened by the the oil industry, state corruption and politics.
