Argentine president Cristina Fernández has formally accepted an invitation by her Cuban counterpart Raul Castro to attend a mass Pope Francis will deliver in the Plaza de La Revolucion in Havana on September 20.
“During her stay in the Republic of Cuba, the President will hold meetings with different authorities of the sisterly nation in which she will address bilateral and multilateral issues,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry said in a release.
It will be the seventh time Cristina Fernandez the Argentine pontiff comes together in the margins of a religious activity.
On July 12, the Argentine leader attended the multitudinous mass that Francis gave in the Paraguayan locality of Ñu Guazú that marked the end of his South American tour that took him to Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay.
In 2013, they came together in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil were the head of the Roman Catholic Church took part in the World Youth Day celebrations. Furthermore, they met five days after then Buenos Aires cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected pope.
Last year, in March, they held their third meeting, a private gathering, in the Vatican, at the Santa Marta papal residency while on September 20 they met for the fourth time also in Santa Marta.
A new meeting in New York could be also expected during the week of September 20, as Cristina Fernandez will be addressing the United Nations General Assembly for the eighth and last time as president of Argentina while Francis will be delivering a message to the UN for the first time as pope.
