Chinese President Xi Jinping promised support for a permanent UN police squad and African peacekeeping as he vowed a peaceful rise for the Asian power. Read full article
China's ACTIONS in the South China Sea speak volumes louder than their WORDS at the UN.
“The law of the jungle leaves the weak at the mercy of the strong. It is not a way for countries to conduct their relations,” Xi said. “Those who adopt the high-handed approach of using force will find that they are only lifting a rock to drop on their own feet”.
Because bullying Vietnam, Phillipines, Malaysia, Japan and Brunei in territorial disputes is not HIGH HANDED.
And occupying Tibet and colonising it with Han Chinese isn't using FORCE.
And threatening Taiwan isn't BULLYING the weak.
China isn't a superpower. Some people need to look up the definition. China might be a world power but is far from a superpower.
China's working population has been shrinking for the past 3 years. Its population was estimated to start shrinking in 2035 then 2030 then 2025 and now its estimated that it could be as early as 2020.
Its population shrinkage is estimated to be almost similar to Germany's by 2050 and the worst case population estimate for 2100 is ~600 million or a drop of nearly 50%.
Look at Japan to see what happens when a bubble bursts and your population stops growing. Already China has lost most its labour arbitrage to places as diverse as Vietnam, India and Mexico.
Its on track for 30 million 'bare branches' or men who not only won't get married but some will probably hardly ever have sex. So there's social instability just waiting to erupt while magnifying its demographic crisis. Did someone mention bombings in China today?
China has 2 large ethnic areas that don't want to be part of China. Watch those cause even more problems as those areas have younger populations.
China has border disputes with almost every single neighbour.
China will be big. It will be powerful. But it won't be the biggest or the most powerful. Its time under the sun is a long way in the past. Its influence will be secondary to the US.

Don’t forget the reliance on imported oil/gas (hence the interest in various island groups belonging to their neighbours) and increasingly food, which is being exacerbated by polluted ground water on a vast scale, including in some of the most fertile and productive areas.
A power definitely, a superpower maybe but not proven so far, either way a constrained one.
Never mind Brasso, better luck with your next pipe dream.
The Brasileiros buy into the hype because China makes Brazil feel important. China treats Brazil as it thinks it should be treated, as a world power.
When it's not.
A regional power, yes. But nowhere near a world power. It's doubtful that it will be. Its politicians are so venal and its throwing all its eggs into the BRICS basket. I mean they even want to add Argentina to that group. Nothing kills a group quicker than having Argentina as a member. It's the same poison that Russia adds to a group hence why China is so cool on the idea.
Anyway Brazil doesn't have any sort of special relationship with Brazil. For every article that shows it does, I could counter with one from Australia.
China is out to grow its power and prestige. Brazil (and Australia) are merely rungs on a ladder. China doesn't have friends.
No one trusts the Chinese government, not even the Chinese.
