Thousands of dead fish washed up on the shores of Rio’s Guanabara Bay during the week, not far from where events are being held at this year’s Olympic Games, environmental officials said. The incident was the latest involving water quality in the bay, where sailing, open water swimming, and triathlon races are due to take place during the Games in August. Read full article

Disclaimer & comment rulesAfter visting St Helena my friends recently returned from Rio aghast at the fact that the Olympics will take place there. They described it as a shithole with one football stadium alongside a stinking sea.
Jan 16th, 2016 - 10:53 am - Link - Report abuse 0Now we can see Brasso and his mates 'fishing' in the bay as he reported recently!
Jan 16th, 2016 - 11:07 am - Link - Report abuse 0That's cheating Brasso, they are already dead, just like the whole country will be in a very few years unless DumbAss Dilma and her crooks are thrown out pretty damn soon.
Has Brazil got anywhere clean? Olympics should be cancelled. Who can tell what diseases competitors will get? Is the Brazilian government guaranteeing evacuation to safe hospital facilities in a proper country? Paying for all treatment? Compensation?
Jan 16th, 2016 - 11:58 am - Link - Report abuse 0Games should never have been awarded to Brazil. It's clearly a shithole.
Rio is dirty and dangerous.
Jan 16th, 2016 - 02:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 03rd world countries should not be able to apply to host the Olympics.
Maybe it would be better to have an island like in the Hunger Games.
:)
It IS true, Conq. #3 is right.
Jan 16th, 2016 - 04:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Much of coastal Brasil is contaminated by human sewage, with E. coli acceptable levels way beyond the permissible.
I have spent many evenings fishing the coast for reef fish and snappers to find the incoming tide deep in faecal scum as the rising rivers funnel the pollution within the reef when a cloud-burst occurs in the coastal communities.
Rio bays have much pollution which will similarly damage the reputation and health of the Olympians.
But can anyone imagine the Olympic Committee having the strength of character to cancel?
Jan 16th, 2016 - 05:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Just imagine the claims for compensation from Brazil; I mean, they swim in shit why should anybody else object?
It's obvious that this mess will never be cleaned up in time, if at all. Any Olympic athletes who jump into that water do it at their own peril. The warnings are blaring loud and clear. The Brazilian government is not prepared to aid these athletes should they fall violently ill during the Olympic games. At least the water events need to either be cancelled or moved to another country. This is a disaster in the making.
Jan 16th, 2016 - 05:45 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@7 At least the water events need to either be cancelled or moved to another country That is a reasonable solution.
Jan 16th, 2016 - 07:57 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Olympic teams move with their own medical teams.
Other than floating garbage the officials saw no “visual abnormalities” in the water.
Jan 16th, 2016 - 08:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0This is laughable. Other than the garbage , no 'visual' abnormalities.....what about the smell of raw sewage ? If these officials are so sure that the water presents no risk to the atletes, why don't they just pull a glass of water out of the bay and drink it ?
Besides the contaminated water, staying on dry land will have its problems as well....where are the authorities going to put the thousands of street criminals that usually prowl the backroads and the beaches, looking for easy victims ?
