Argentina and Great Britain are close to reaching an agreement on procedures for the identification of the Argentine combatants buried at the memorial in the Falkland Islands, reports Clarin, Apparently discussions are quite advanced and an Argentine proposal was replied by a Foreign Office counter proposal. Disclaimer & comment rulesI'll bet the Foreign Office 'counter proposal' was speak to the Falkland Islands Government.
Feb 24th, 2016 - 07:21 am - Link - Report abuse 0It would have to be, because the UK Government cannot give permission for the International Red Cross to disturb the remains of the Argentine dead in the Falkland Islands. Only the Falkland Islands Government can do that.
So if Argentina is really serious about this, they're going to have to talk to the Falkland Islands Government at some point.
the operation must not turn into a media circus No, no, no... surely those nice Argentineans would never, ever, EVER dreeeeeeam of doing that now, would they? Yeah... right.
Feb 24th, 2016 - 08:20 am - Link - Report abuse 0Thats exactly what they'll do……if they get a chance.
Feb 24th, 2016 - 09:37 am - Link - Report abuse 0ln fact its probably their main reason for wanting to identify the dead.
What's the betting that the bodies will be 'examined' for 'abuse' as well? And who will be blamed for this so called 'abuse'. NOT the argies, that's for sure.
Feb 24th, 2016 - 10:57 am - Link - Report abuse 0This cretin still doesn't get it. ONLY the Falklanders are the ones to approve this action and WHO will do it, not him.
DON'T trust anybody who worked with TMBOA on this. :o(
What is this article but a media circus. A load of speculative twaddle cobbled together to create exactly nothing.
Feb 24th, 2016 - 11:16 am - Link - Report abuse 0All sides involved in the issue, Argentines, British and Falkland Islanders agree it's a humanitarian issue but also coincide that the operation must not turn into a media circus.
Feb 24th, 2016 - 11:31 am - Link - Report abuse 0The media circus created by Argentina during CFKs reign achieved exactly, zero regarding this.
The Argentines have to speak to the Islands government to sort this.
Presumably Argentine tourists have to get their passports stamped in the Falkland Islands by immigration (an FIG authority) so what's the problem?
A small group of adults can´t agree on how to do that, and several people here can not identify the remains of their beloved ones, adding sorrow to their lost.
Feb 24th, 2016 - 12:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What a shame. Truly shameful.
Time to put pride aside, everybody.
#7 It didn't have to be this way. Argentinian officers could have volunteered the information about the fallen at the cessation of hostilities... but they didn't. Successive Argentine governments could have talked with the authorities in the Falkland Islands... but they didn't. Better still, the Argentinians could have stayed at home rather than invade our islands and cause the deaths of so many... but they didn't. They even had an option to abide by a UN resolution to leave the islands before hostilities against them commenced... but they didn't. Pride doesn't come into it.

Feb 24th, 2016 - 01:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0On the contrary, it is pride (among other negative reasons) indeed.
What else could be the reason they (Arg) don´t say ok, who do I have to talk to make this happen? and simply get it working.
Call it pride, failed strategy, lack of authentic interest, etc. Something is delaying, without genuine reason, the identification of those KIA servicemen. And as article says, time is running out against the relatives.
It was not WWII. It was not a massive, for-years war of hate. It was one of the most `special´ wars ever: short term, lower casualties, not-so-different armies, not-so-different cultures involved, fully respect for international humanitarian laws, etc. The fact that 30 years later they are still not identified is unacceptable.
Out of respect to the dead,

Is it British Territory....?
Feb 25th, 2016 - 01:47 am - Link - Report abuse 0Best ask the bosses of Britain then....

Feb 25th, 2016 - 06:36 am - Link - Report abuse 0If by pride you mean Malvinistas then yes fine, but don't include the FIs in this or the UK. It was your war, your country's defeat, your failure to identify the fallen or deal maturely with the legacy of the war and today is your country's failure to come to terms with reality. The FIs are completely blameless in this regard and yes you are going to have to speak to them to get their permission. It's their country not yours or mine and I am not surprised that the FIs are concerned that this could be used to drum up Malvinista sentiment. Your country lies to your people about the history of the FIs and lied to you about the progress of the war, so there just seems little chance that this will only be about reconciliation.
Oh V0ice with a zero in your name.

Feb 25th, 2016 - 10:37 am - Link - Report abuse 0Yes I meant the malvinist song.
I am also afraid this may be turned into a circus: as another poster said, this should be an all-professionals no-cameras job.
Voice 11- you really are off the plot! Yes the Falkland Islands ARE British Territory - they are a British Overseas Territory and thus as such have their OWN democratic elected Govt that has full responsibility for all things that go on IN - and AROUND the Islands within our EEZ.
Feb 25th, 2016 - 03:25 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The British Govt has responsibility for Defence and External Foreign Affairs.
The Arg Military Cemetery is in the Islands ON the land - and thus the Falkland Islands Govt is the responsible power that would have to be approached. Got It?
Yes the Falkland Islands ARE British Territory

Correct, the UK and the Falkland Islanders-you don't count.

Hahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahaha-you mean the ancient T-37 Dragonfly aircraft that they lend to your lot?
Well they are jet powered, but again unleash them against our Typhoons if it floats your boat (not an Argentine saying I guess as your boats are more liable to sink ).
