The Irish Farmers' Association has described an European Union offer to allow limited access to the EU market for Mercosur beef producers as “unfair”. The offer, which includes beef producers in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, is about to be presented to European Union member states for discussion, ahead of a proposed formal exchange of offers as part of the EU-Mercosur trade negotiations in May. Disclaimer & comment rulesFoot and mouth? I am old enough to remember when there constant outbreaks of this infection and imports of Argentine beef were usually the cause of the outbreak.
Apr 08th, 2016 - 12:34 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Latam countries would not think twice about sending diseased meat to the EU if it were in their interests. Why on earth would they stick to strict regulations as they obviously do not in their own countries, only have to look at their judicial systems to verify that.
Apr 08th, 2016 - 12:51 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Aside from the apparent economic issues, it's a pity that Simon Coveney does not want the Irish to have access to decent beef....and if they try to get around this by alleging it's a health issue, why can't this be solved by imposing strict sanitary controls ?
Apr 08th, 2016 - 04:39 pm - Link - Report abuse 0what's the alternative ? carry on eating spuds...
@3 I was about to say the same thing. This patty doesn't have a leg to stand on. More like a potato man we made when we were kids.
Apr 08th, 2016 - 10:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Pretty soon the EU will be all Muslim ,so they won't be eating much meat.

Apr 08th, 2016 - 10:44 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What are you fecking talking about. Clearly neither of you have been to Ireland because if you had you would know that we have top quality beef. Last year we exported over half a million tons of it. I know not much compared with the large beef producers but then we are only a tiny country.
As for your nasty racist slurs concerning potatoes - what a pair of tossers.
You sound like the dumb yanks we get here who say geeee, we thought you guys only ate potayyytoooes.
As for K's idiot comment about Muslims, it's only pork they don't eat.
i think its funny when people say dumb yank when we rule the world.

YB,
who's we? Certainly not you.
I have a lot of respect for USA Americans and I have many friends there.
Of course, there are more than a few crackpots. Cruz, dub-yah, Palin, Trump... to name a few.
As DerkeBlake pointed out to me this evening, the Republican candidate nomination process , is not being regarded as an election as much as an intelligence test for Americans.
's funny that Obama felt it necessary to reassure everyone that he wouldn't hand over the Launch Codes to Trump.
All men are created equal
A notable contradiction to US Democratic values, that the Bush family and the GOP feel it is acceptable to subvert the Democratic process of representation by 'stopping' the very popular Trump and his uneducated supporters.
YB/ Luci,
Who decides who is educated enough to vote?

Why should the Irish economy suffer because your country can't run anything properly-including agriculture?

Pork is forbidden but beef is acceptable if it is halal. Hindus cannot eat beef.

Apr 11th, 2016 - 07:16 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You're right, I've never been to Ireland, but I do have Irish friends, who praise Irish whiskey (in my opinion, better than most Scotch) but have never even mentioned Ireland's 'top quality beef' .....nor have I ever heard of it from any other source....but then again, if you say it's good, I'll give you credit.
Now, I'm going ask you : have you ever eaten top-quality beef from Argentina ? If you have, then you can make a fair comparison, based on experience and not on blind nationalism....Now, if you don't want to risk eating Argentine beef, you can try USDA prime beef ? if well prepared, it's very hard to beat.
Last of all, I presume you are Irish, and as such, are supposed to have a great sense of humour....so where's your's ? which takes me your silly comments about my 'nasty racist slurs concerning potatoes'......maybe you think I should go to Church and ask forgivenness for my sins, but I can assure you I had no intention of offending your potato ....and how does a joke about a potato make someone a racist ?? beyond hilarious !
