Defence Secretary Michael Fallon announced that the steel cut for the Royal Navy’s new next generation Type 26 Global Combat Ship now will take place in summer 2017, subject to final contract negotiations. The 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR15) set out the UK Government's commitment to build eight Anti-Submarine Type 26 Global Combat Ships. Read full article

Am I right in saying that work will not start until next summer,
and no steel has yet been cut ,
so can the MOD change its mind and still reduce the ship numbers further?
I am given to understand that they are still not agreed what steel will be used,
as some suspect that this government will use French steel and not all British,
we need more ships, and I still don't trust them,
but at least the ship workers in Scotland will be happy if all goes ok..
The MOD can do anything ! The govt. could turn round and cancel the order - anything is possible with this shower .
Nov 06th, 2016 - 09:56 am - Link - Report abuse +1Although the ships are built on the Clyde the workers come from all over the UK.
The kind of country who has been running a budget deficit since 2002 and decides to purchase some shiny new warships must have some really sensible leadership, particularly given the extremely grim economic forecasts after the country decided to commit collective suicide.

What are YOU compensating for yourself? - 3 posts, 3 divisive, undermining comments about the British.
Undermining what exactly?
Nov 06th, 2016 - 10:28 pm - Link - Report abuse -5I'd say applauding a bankrupt country purchasing warships to be a little more divisive, or at least insane.
Bankrupt is when you are unable to pay your debts...
Nov 06th, 2016 - 11:35 pm - Link - Report abuse +1As far as I'm aware the UK is not a bankrupt country...

Nov 06th, 2016 - 11:46 pm - Link - Report abuse +2Jealousy will get you nowhere.
If you bother to read the news you will see that the BoE, IMF, ECB and many of the credit rating agencies have all upped the projected increase in the UK's GDP over the next couple of years. Inflation is at 1 percent, unemployment is amongst the lowest in Europe. Not bad for a bankrupt country. 95% of the EU wishes it were as bankrupt. I certainly wish Ireland was. Oh, by the way how's Argentina doing?
Your anti-British invective reminds me of someone, now let me THINK I wonder who it could be.
We'll see how much longer the deficit can be sustained and how much longer Moody's et. al. will take seriously a country whose debt nears 100% of GDP - something that is pretty much unheard of outside Iceland and Luxembourg. At least those countries don't seriously consider buying new military hardware and cold war era nuclear missiles.
Nov 07th, 2016 - 12:14 am - Link - Report abuse -4As for growth, we'll see how those predictions turn around very quickly once the country finds it has no free trade treaties, no trading partners and an entire continent trying to ensure that the worst possible outcome for it so no one else gets any funny ideas. Not to mention the impending brain drain and countless companies already committed to relocating to places within the EU as well as all the migrant workers leaving now that they're effectively earning 30% less than before.
I don't know why people keep mentioning Argentina. It has nothing to do with this article nor how the UK has become the laughing stock of the world over the last few months.
Speaking of laughingstock, have you noticed that the Diccionario de la Lengua Española now has a map of Argentina for its definition of hazmerreír ?
Nov 07th, 2016 - 12:21 am - Link - Report abuse +1So I take it your position is that the UK is indeed doomed, is the butt of every joke the world over, but hey, at least it's not as bad as Argentina? Things really are getting desperate, aren't they?
Nov 07th, 2016 - 01:08 am - Link - Report abuse -3Maybe you're concerned that there will be further austerity measures, and when analysing wasteful expenditure someone might ask themselves why it is that millions are being wasted on subsidising a bunch of inbred sheep herders.
No I think you'll find that's Argentina!

As you seem to be the most recent incarnation of Argie economists -(pardon the oxymoron) - and political gurus, can you spell out to me what specific subsidies from the UK Treasury the Falklands receive, with SPECIFIC PROVABLE MONETARY AMOUNTS.
As to the updating our navy, as a member of NATO we have a commitment to keep our forces equipped to meet all possible threats. The UK always had the lead role in ASW in NATO and this is just confirmation that we intend to continue in this vein.
We have learned from past mistakes that it is cheaper in the long run to be prepared for eventualities than be caught out as we were with a rogue country in S.America.
Oh, for crying out loud, it's no gifted, man of mystery, just a Think incarnation to push buttons and upticks
Nov 07th, 2016 - 05:55 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Who says I'm Argentine? Maybe I'm just tired of the same couple of thousand attention seekers being so vocal and present in the geopolitical zeitgest despite having no importance whatsoever and both countries clearly having better things to do than to cater to these backwards whining scroungers.
Nov 07th, 2016 - 06:39 pm - Link - Report abuse -3The best solution would be to move this tiny population to the Shetland Islands and both countries drop their claims. Argentina hardly needs any more land, and the UK with all its current financial woes hardly needs to create a military presence in a region which it has no strategic interests in and finance some distant village. Not to mention annoying an entire continent at a time where it looks like all trading partners are likely to be lost. The islands could be turned into the world's most barren wildlife sanctuary and be considered part of Antarctica. With the savings made, the population could be set for life, herding as many sheep and sleeping with as many cousins as they deem fit. It might be harder to exploit Chinese slave labour from there though.
And thanks Think. If only the posters here would follow the suggestion of your namesake rather than repeating 19th century nationalist bile like scratched records.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it is probably a duck.
If you are neither Argentinian nor British then it's none of your business. It cannot affect you one way or the other, so why the bile and hatred to a few thousand people on a remote island who are just trying to get on with their lives?
So, tell us what nationality you are...if not, then we must suppose that you are just another Argie related Troll. You are repeating the same tired rhetoric that we have heard before from Trolls who have been silent for months.
If Argentina renounces any claim to the Falklands then we would not need any military presence...problem solved.
Forcibly evict them and send them to the Shetlands. How simplistic ! What do they do for a living ? where are the houses, schools and other infrastructure ?
