    It is incredible that such a building could just go up like that, I mean you would think this happened in Bangladesh or something. Terrible construction materials and obviously completely inadequate fire suppression systems AND evacuation infraestructure. This seems like a failure in multiple levels. And May's reaction was completely appalling in the lack of any immediacy and had it been CFK the anti-argies here would likely be accusing her of genocide.

    Four terror attacks, pound collapse, economic slowdown, two botched election processes, political chaos, isolation from Europe, self-inflicted diminishing of clout ahead of Brexit talks, and the provinces remain restless (NI, Scotland)...

    Pretty rough year for the UK.

    Using a tragedy to try and score points against the UK. Stay classy Trollboy.

    I guess when you accused people in Europe of not caring about deaths in South America you were just projecting.

    Who is scoring points here? Please, I can't state facts now out of some ridiculous sense of misplaced sobriety. No where have I said “Look how UK sucks and Argentina is so great”, because of all of this.

    I am just stating facts, just like the Brits here did for 8 years claiming they were not 'anti-argie' but just stating the facts. Good for the goose...

    An appalling, incomprehensible tragedy. My heart goes to the British people who have suffered so many tragedies in such a short time.

    Out of respect for all those who suffered in this fire, a serious investigation must be carried out to determine those responsible for the failure to provide fireproof materials alarms and sufficient evacuation exits in this building.

    @AustrOllOpithecus
    99% of your posts are you saying “look how the UK sucks”, and this is no exception.

    I think it's pretty sad that after seeing a bunch of idiots and assholes posting on here, you've chosen to make yourself one of them. You know it's wrong because you've been on the other side, but you still do it.

    @EM
    As I understand it, the thinking was that any fire could be controlled and contained to part of the building, so it was never planned to allow evacuation of all the people. It looks like the cladding was to blame for the very rapid spread of the fire, but I think this principle must now be reviewed. Problem is, there will be many other towers with similar issues, and it may be difficult or impossible to add fire escapes, sprinklers etc to old buildings.

    To be honest, none of us know how the fire started and we will have to wait until the experts have looked at the evidence and report. I noticed in the local news today that there was a fire in a 24 story high rise flat in Glasgow and it was contained without any casualties. It would appear that not all high-rise buildings are dangerous.

    Seemingly Glasgow has the most high-rise flats in the UK.

    If 99/100 fires are contained then the buildings seem safe, but eventually you get one that isn't and this disaster happens. It looks like a lot of other buildings were built according to the same standards, which we now know are not good enough. But apparently people were complaining about fire risk before this happened, so maybe there is something more to it.

    @ DT

    The addition of the panels to the outside of the structure seems to have compromised the otherwise sufficient fire safety standard. The private property management company was given £11m of tax-payers money to make improvements to the building. Unfortunately they didn't seem to give consideration to fire equipment or safety. This could well be corporate manslaughter.

    Still, let's not let that get in the way of causing more division and hatred in the country whipped up by Corbyn who wants to tear up land and property ownership laws for a moment of applause. Imagine if that idiot had been PM.

    @EB
    I heard the panels were completely legal; that people have been trying to get them banned but no law has been passed yet. But I also think the concept that a fire can always be contained is a wrong one, similar to assuming the Titanic was unsinkable. There will always be something you haven't thought of, so high-rises should be designed to have sprinkler systems and alarms and emergency exits.

    The government compulsory purchasing flats for homeless people sounds like a daft idea, but what is so divisive about it? They do exactly that in order to build reservoirs and airport runways without causing division and hatred.

    There really is a problem with mostly rich foreigners buying property in London as an investment and leaving it empty, I would support a high tax on empty properties in areas with a housing shortage to try and free them up for people to live in.

    The question is why is this piece appearing in Mercopenguin, a propaganda organ supposedly devoted to America, South America and the “South Atlantic”?
