Full article 50 comments

Anger has been expressed in the Falkland Islands this week over a letter which was sent to the Argentine Governor of Tierra del Fuego, Rosana Bertone, by a representative of the National Geographic Foundation. The letter, dated February 8, contains an apology for the appearance of the label ‘Falkland Islands’ instead of ‘Malvinas Islands’ on photos published on Instagram, which were taken here. Written in Spanish, it contains a paragraph which translates as: “National Geographic Society at no moment has wanted to disavow the Argentine claim over the South Atlantic islands territory, including the Malvinas Islands. For that reason we have requested those people who manage that social network to remove such publication and rectify the way in which they refer to those islands in the future, so it is respectful of the clearly defined position of the Argentine government.”

    Claim? Based on what?

Argentina chose to defy a binding UN resolution to withdraw its invasion forces from the Falkland Islands in 1982. Please explain why anything defined by the UN should be observed by Argentina?

After smarting from the drubbing you received regarding your observations on Filipino women on the Falkland Islands you turn up here trying to spread more disinformation. You are just a noxious anti British Nazi Colonialist troll. Get lost.

Think - wrong - UN always correctly officially uses both names to describe the Islands. Correct procedure as there is a dispute(which there is whatever those of us on both sides believe).

I guess if National Geographic don't want to continue visiting the Islands, that's their loss. If FIG don't get an apology, National Geographic will have to make do with checking whether the sewers in Ushuaia function yet. They can have tea with Bertone instead.

Strange... When I went to Port Stanley a few years back there was a big sign on which was printed “Welcome to the Falkland Islands”. You would think that if they were really called “Islas Malvinas” that the locals would have changed the sign by now.

Here's a list of them, if it will help you account for your mates:

Roberto Baratta, Jorge Omar Mayoral, Jaime Horacio Alvarez, Miguel Angel Larregina, Marta Nilda Perez, Juan Marcelo Vargas, Fernando Jorge Lisse, Hugo Ramon Sanchez, Orlando Marino Taboada Ovejero, Orlando Javier Pastori, Gustavo Alejandro Maza, Claudio Edgardo Masson, Diego Osvaldo Di Lorenzo, and Carina Anahí Mendoza.

Dispute? What dispute? I'm not aware of a shred of evidence for any historic connection between the Falklands and Argentina. It's a political fantasy, not a dispute. A handful of Spanish sailors were politely moved on from the Islands; whether they sailed to the newly-founded Republic is neither here nor there.

“ I see no evidence, legal or otherwise to prove the Malvinas is not a mere colony of a bullying superpower on territory that never belonged to them.”

That's because you haven't looked. There is plenty of evidence in Mercopress archives, if you haven't understood yet, I guess you never will.

And you fail to see the irony, that Argentina's approach to the Falkland Islands under the peronists was totally colonialist and beneath the surface may remain so.

If the Falkland Islands are a colony, why do the UK allow the islands to have a local government that is elected by people that live there?

Why does the governor no longer have a vote in the Government?

With a colony, a governor has ultimate control, and the coloniser imposes every law from overseas, and without local influence.

You have a fake governor who claims in her dreams to administer the Islands and others from TDF without having set foot on the Falkland Islands.

That is the worst example of 'remote' colonialism, a so called 'governor' that none of the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands want.

For bullying power, minus the super, look no further than Argentina, specifically when run by peronist governments.

“Some day they will have to return all the lands they stole around the globe”

    Which ones?

All the countries occupied by the UK wanting independence have it.

If you are referring to the Falkland Islands, where were Argentina when the Brits built Jason Town and Fort George on Saunders Island in 1766?

Where were all the Argentine fishing fleets around the islands from 18th century right through to the 19th?

    Viejo

As Dhekalia and Akrotiri are British Sovereign bases, ESTABLISHED BY TREATY, Darragh is quite correct in saying that they have NO desire for independence from the UK.

They are not BOT's. The agreement in the treaty was that no civilian building or settlements would be permitted.

If Britain moved out, Russia would soon move in to Akrotiri. As it is, they have facilities in Limassol for refueling naval vessels. The Cypriots are used to Russian money as their “Mafia” launder millions through the country and it is a popular tourist destination.
