Twenty years ago, this month, one of Argentina's then leading political analysts and journalist publicly admitted the Falkland Islands belong to the Islanders. Mariano Grondona had been invited to the Islands by the Legislative Council and during a gathering with locals said the famous quote, “The Falkland Islands belong to you, the Islanders”. Sensible chap.

Argentina will never be a true democracy until it recognises the Falkland Islanders right to self-determination.

I would suggest that the islanders check the background of some Argentine political “analysts” before publishing their comments. Mr. Mariano Grondona, a catholic conservative, has been involved in some military coups and was one of the “unofficial commentator” of the military government during the war. Clearly, he is the typical argentine chameleon .....

Grondona mooted the idea of “freezing the sovereignty issue” for a considerable amount of time.
Wonderful idea except that as far as the Falkland Islands are concerned, there is no issue. So no-one can agree with Grondona, for to do so would be to concede that there is an issue where in fact none exists. So sorry Sr. Grondona, no can do. Now if he were to say that Argentina should unilaterally suspend their claim for a period of time, or even abandon it altogether, that would work.

It’s hard to believe it’s 20 years since he was here; I remember very well meeting him and having a good chat. He drew a pretty decent crowd at the public meeting also. Most people gave him a fair hearing but at the end of the day his ideas were long-term solutions to achieving Argentine control or shared control at the very least. He was politely told thanks for expressing his views and bid a farewell.

pgerman is right that this guy was a dictatorship supported, or dictatorship fan i think its the term. However, i dont think he was personally involved in any military coup.
For sure, he was not a decent man in my opinion. He praised the military junta even during democratic governments where there were no dictatorship threat of dead against free speach and all its atrocities were known.
Having said that. I think he has all the right to express his opinion as everyone else. The islanders praise Margaret Thatcher which was also very, very supported with military juntas, and even made a statue of her, and, like this character called Mariano Grondona, have their valid opinion.
The difference is that Thatcher really, really supported the military regimes with more than public support.

I don't quite understand what you mean...Thatcher would support her own military obviously, but it was not a military regime, do you mean she supported other military regimes or juntas...?

Yes i meant military regimes. Like Pinochet or Saddam, or all the anti communist dictatorships including the argentine (before the war of course).

This last link is not about Thatcher but its really funny to know how britain sold armoured personnel carriers and water cannon to Gadaffi to later derrocate him:

“...admitted” LOL ... The never ending propaganda campaign. So, the guy did not just say that because it happens to be what he believes? MercoPress as always insulting and offensive in its thought coercion crusade. They want to use his statement to suggest “Even Argentine agree with us”, but they do so in a way that seeks to separate our people in two groups by suggesting that 'some of us “admit” it'. Always the stupid little inference!! This publication is pure cyber con-artistry and yet it reflects so well the way the English think in how they go about international politics.

In any case, I would agree that the fate of the Malvinas would be in their proportional amount in the Islander's hands, or let's even entertain that London has nothing at all what so ever to do with “their fate” (lol) and Argentina never existed is on another planet and irrelevant. Still; it would not mean that the Islanders are incapable of thinking right, thinking appropriately and correctly, thinking freely and independently from all and any suggestion or influence, and knowing how to do the right thing by the standards of common justice and objectivity. Does it?

Patrick, what are you smoking these days? There are many sensible people in Argentina who are intelligent enough to see through your anti Falklands propaganda. Unfortunately they keep their heads down to avoid your violent thuggish comrades. You dont represent the Argentines I have met… fortunately.

Marquitos Alejandrito and Patrick Edgar - together at the same time! Both with their usual idiotic and meaningless posturing!

    Good morning, niños!
