This is what happens with true leaders: In adversity, they still inspire their people.

Lula will outgrow his legend while his enemies crumble by their own weight.

And Brazil will see the light again.

Can't deny that Lula was a leader....despite the fact that his followers are mainly ignorant and stupid, because they still support him after he stole from them....and from all those who did not support him...
But I must admire your blind, misguided optimism.

So the 1 year commemoration of his imprisonment drew about 3,000 followers in Curitiba, mainly unnocupied rural workers from the MST, waving their red flags and eating 'mortadella' sandwiches - all bussed to Curitiba by the PT and the left-wing unions - while on the Av. Paulista 10s of 1000s went to support Bolsonaro and Guedes...as can be seen below :-

Whereas this expert has you down pat, as dumb. “...Studies have found, for example, that children with poor mental skills grow up to be strongly right-wing adults....Considerable evidence shows that conservative ideology predicts all sorts of prejudice—against ethnic and racial minorities, the disadvantaged, any outgroup. ... Dhont and Hodson tested and confirmed this mediation model: Lower childhood intelligence clearly predicts right-wing ideology and attitude, which in turn predicts prejudice in adulthood.”

REF: “followers are mainly ignorant and stupid”:

Not JUST The Followers but the Rest of the MASSES too!

    After all:

#1: Why the rest of the crooks continue to be honored as the political leaders, senators, governors, etc, enjoy special privileges+protections + are nowhere near prisons; while the farcical investigations remain never-ending!

#2: On the other hand; just a few of those who are behind bars; PREFER imprisonment rather than confessing their crimes + return the stolen wealth!!!

By ANY chance; Will these STUPID+IGNORANT MASSES ever WAKE-UP to notice that SOMETHING DEFINITELY HAS GONE TERRIBLY WRONG?

I mentioned Canada - a lovely country that should start to kick out some of it's imported commies - because it's where one of Lula's most fanatical supporters hides out .... he is aka Gollum, and lives in his mother's basement.....he rears his ugly, slimy head every now and again, even when not called upon, only to spout his biased sh*t. He has the unfortunate habit of becoming derailed when someone doesn't agree with him, going off topic, and quoting useless phrases...

Give you two guesses as to who it is...altho one should be enough.

Facts and opinions are often uttered in the same breath; the terms have a huge difference in their meanings. Whether a statement is a fact or an opinion depends on the validity of the statement. While a fact refers to the something true or real, which is backed by evidence, documentation, etc. On the other hand, opinion is what a person believes or pretends about something.
In finer terms, a fact is a proven truth, whereas opinion is a personal view, that represents the outlook of an individual, which in this case is never based on any facts.
Difference Between Fact and Opinion. Thats why I personally best my uniformed opposition every time.

“Justice rules over the Brazilian nation” Hardly.
“Yet crucially, there is no evidence that Lula either owned or lived in the triplex at any point. Beyond the suspicious activity with apartment 164-A, the court cited no evidence that directly implicated Lula in a quid pro quo with OAS. Instead, it argued that because it is known that OAS was taking kickbacks from Petrobras, and Lula was the sitting president at the time, it is reasonable to infer that he was aware and complicit. This is, needless to say, not sufficient evidence to convict someone beyond a reasonable doubt. And indeed, according to several analysts, no European or American court would have ruled to convict based on the evidence presented”

So true. Is there any way to get through to the determinedly ignorant?

Ctn. “Sales of new cars in Argentina”
“As to being recruited/disillusioned with the cause, you've got to be a complete a.hole to be recruited in the first place”

For most terrorists, sure. But those 15 year old girls who left the UK to become 'jihadi brides' in Syria have been in the news lately. Maybe they have some excuse being young and stupid? Anyway, most murders aren't a simple mistake, either. Some people probably regret their actions, others only regret getting caught. How do you tell the difference?

“Today, with DNA, security camera footage, plus witness testifying, I think it's pretty hard to make a mistake”

I dunno. In some cases, probably not, but not all are so clear. I've seen CCTV footage and it's often so fuzzy it could be anyone. Looking at all the miscarriages of justice that have been uncovered, it's hard to feel confident. And I don't feel too comfortable saying the penalty for a crime should depend on how good the evidence is. Though maybe that is the point of all those appeals that death row prisoners get in the US.

Re Brexit, I'm not really worried about my money, it's just my partner is dead set on buying an expensive house in the country which will take nearly all of our savings and a big mortgage. It makes me nervous when we don't know where we'll be in 6 month's time. Probably I'm just too pessimistic, but it's been very nice having no outstanding debt and plenty of savings to fall back on. Besides that we've now got health issues to worry about. :(

“So true. Is there any way to get through to the determinedly ignorant?”....VERY difficult ...that's why investment in education is essential.

Re (Contn “Sales of new cars in Arg”), “For most terrorists, sure. But those 15 year old girls who left the UK to become 'jihadi brides'....to be that gullible, to the point of being ”disillusioned” (based on what ? that they can't afford a Rolls Royce ?), the only excuse I can think of, is pure ignorance and the total lack of comprehension of how life works.

Unfortunately, you only get the opportunity to try to tell the difference - btwn regretting actions , or being caught - after the murderer is caught....the motivation might be a clue...only man-slaughter 'could' be considered a 'mistake'....I doubt a terrorist would regret anything, except that he did not kill more, while a guy who kills his wife, might legitimately regret he killed her...besides also regretting being caught.

DNA isn't fuzzy, and if the CCTV footage is, it's discarded. But what I'm saying is that the evidence - when pieced together, or even isolatedly, in the case of clear CCTV - such as testimony by witnesses, DNA, being identified by the victim - if manages to survice - usually just reinforces the conclusion. If you think 'good' evidence is not good enough, then what ? and if you are only going to convict based on a confession - which rarely occurs - you might as well not prosecute /try to convict anyone. You have to decide, based on what you have, to convict, or not convict. If there's doubt, the jury won't convict. The death row appeals in the US are based on new evidence, such as a witness who never came forward, or doing a DNA check on blood of 20 years ago.

But why should investing in real estate be jeopardized by Brexit ? (over the long term, especially if you intend living in it, not speculating ?)..Sounds you're just too comfortable to want to take a risk...which might not even be high....but I agree, it's not like buying a car.

“that's why investment in education is essential.”

I agree, even if the others don't.

And I don't know what makes people support terrorists. Guess some people are looking for a cause - something to believe in - even if it's a bad one. The girl on the news is 18 now, and she wants to come back to the UK. Not because she's stopped supporting the terrorists, but because she had three kids and they all died because she stupidly chose to live in a goddamn warzone. I don't see why we should let her come back when she hasn't even changed her mind.

Some of the cases I've read about, miscarriages of justice, were based on dodgy witnesses, who confessed to save themselves, and there was very little other evidence. It's hard to see how they were convicted in the first place, but there's nothing to stop it happening again. Anyway, the jury has to decide based on the evidence, that's unavoidable, but you can't bring someone back to life later if they turn out to be mistaken.

As for Brexit, the risk is that house prices fall, or one or both of us loses our job if there's a recession, leading to not being able to pay the mortgage, losing our home and most or all of our savings. But sounds like you do think I'm being overly pessimistic and my partner is right.

Most people, normal people, have their own causes to worry about, such as getting ahead in life.....if they have no personal cause and feel the need to latch on to something crazy, like terrorism, afaic, they have serious mental disorders.
I agree about the girl...she joined ISIS to inflict harm on the west....and now she thinks she can 'officially' regret it and everything goes back to normal ? screw her !

The way in which DNA can help to clarify past crimes, it can work against criminals enjoying their freedom, or in favour of people doing time...but the line has to be drawn somewhere ....the system is not always going to be perfect. The death penalty has to be reserved for cases where there is NO doubt...such as catching a school shooter alive...catching a terrorist while building a bomb, or about to detonate one...a serial killer after 25 murders...

It is unlikely Brexit (if it occurs) will reduce the demand for housing....it may not increase demand and inflate prices, but if you are buying a place to live in, who cares what it's worth after you've paid for it ? If you intend buying to speculate, that might be a bad move. As to your worst scenarios, I think you are too damned pessimistic...but by all means, wait until Brexit is defined, one way or the other....no need to rush headlong into something....and if prices drop, you'll buy on the cheap(er). Think of it as a financial investment - is it good or bad ? what's the risk ? wait until the situation defines itself. And if “really” in doubt, don't buy... reduce the chances of getting screwed. Whatever you do, you have to be convinced it's the right move...

The Brexit date has come and gone, though we didn't wait for it on purpose but just couldn't find what we wanted. I think the market has been slow because other people were waiting. But nothing has been resolved, and we can't keep waiting forever.

There is a risk prices will fall, since this area has a ton of immigrants, who might leave if the economy suffers. Still, it would only be a problem if we were forced to move. We work for the same company now and will soon be in the same office, which besides being a bit awkward, creates a bigger risk. I have in the past seen companies close an office to save money and lay off everyone who works there.

I agreed to it, anyway. I probably am too much of a pessimist, like you said. I just wish we had more space and better housing in this country. There's far too many people, and besides that the planning laws mean only cramped and bland housing is allowed to be built. Increasingly, new houses are being built on former gardens, meaning even less green space in towns. Cramming in too many cows or battery chickens is bad for their health and sanity, why don't they think the same applies to humans?
