Here in the Aconcagua Valley we are enjoying a marvelous Springtime and we’re achieving a very good yield from our orchards. Markets are excellent — but ocean logistics are more complicated this season.
Besides our modest production of Hass avocados — our family garden has been currently providing us with plentiful asparagus spears to enjoy at the table.
My mid-day meal is thick-cut smoked bacon, tomato, avocado and garden lettuce on German rye bread accompanied with an ice-cold Kunstmann beer.
I’m currently enjoying a relaxed bachelorhood as Madame is away visiting a Lycée Français school friend in near Chillán. (Located about 400 km south of Santiago.)

Hard to say... currently, voters are polarized between the far left & Bolsonaro.....the far left hasn't made up its mind - at least not officially - who it'll support, but Lula likes to think that he runs the show, 'n while he is purposely ambigious as to whether he will run or not - because it's clear he is not confident he could win - he wants to leave a door open to sneak out of, if the going gets rough.
Bolsonaro, while having done a few good things, destroys that by his wreckless attitudes and his political interference in just about everything. He acts like he's being threatened and has to know what's going on (in independent govt agencies), even if he, as president, does not have the right to know. An example : his intereference in the Federal Police last year, trying to discover what they had found out regrdng his eldest son's corruption scheme while he was in Rio's State legislature.....which eventually led Moro to tell him to get stuffed.
Since then he has acted more 'n more like a tyrant, listening to no one except his 3 stupid sons. He is a complete nut case, and investigations are showing that he and his own family, including ex-wives, are up to their necks in corruption...on a lesser scale than Lula was, but nevertheless just as disgusting. In my opinion, his is own worst enemy, and is doing a great job in helping the 9-fingered ex-con's campaign.
On the other hand, and still rather timidly, a 3rd option is being prepared, by those who don't want neither Lula, nor Bolsonaro. Mainly the biz community.
Congress is divided into 3 groups, far left, far right 'n centre. Both extremes also have members in the centre, which is the largest group and gives Bolsonaro his assurance he won't be impeached. But even many in the centre group along with politicians from the moderate left, are seeing the need to build a 3rd option, which can hopefully, defeat both extremes.

Bolsonaro’s hesitance to utilize mRNA vaccines may actually be very favorable to Brazil.

Chicureo, the political mood in Petrolina (State of PE, northeast region) is probably slightly different to that in the south and southeast.
Anyway, I'd say it's a bit early for Lula to count his chickens.....reasons for this, is that up in the NE, Bolsonaro has managed to captivate a lot of voters for two main reasons.... 1st because the NE is more sensitive to govt handouts than other regions, due to the widespread poverty, and Bolsonaro's “emergency” help which has given his popularity a boost....in the same way that it used to be the ex-con's stronghold due to the “Bolsa Família”.....and 2nd, due to a great deal of ignorance, most people have short memories - while they remember what happened 'yesterday', they forget what happened the day 'before yesterday'.
If they weren't so stupid, collectively speaking, one might think they'd realize that neither of the two options is a good solution.....but to expect them to act logically, is asking too much.
The chances are, that if the 3rd option takes off in the south and southeast, the influence of the northeasterners in the total vote won't be so significant, in that neither of the current 'obvious' candidates will win.
But things in Brazil can change overnight, and only after the election campaign starts for real, will we get a clearer picture

Personally my experience in the São Francisco Valley between your Pernambuco and Bahia states — was that the local governments were corrupt (especially in Bahia).
Although we continuously experienced delays in accomplishing projects due to the attitude of the workers — we we amazed how quickly and efficiently they could construct refrigeration facilities or highly complex electrical installations.
Your country was always surprising compared to Argentina and Peru where I also consulted well over a decade ago.
As you may know — my country will elect a new president this year and by our constitution a president is allowed only 4 years without reelection until the following term.
We too are facing an uncertain political future…
Let’s hope that in the end — positive results will occur!

In a civilized country, where the majority of the population is not made up of blithering idiots, probably 'yes', but in South America ?
One needs to understand that public schooling in Brazil - with rare exceptions, such as some State Universities, not all - is very sub-standard, producing morons, especially after the forced quota system came into effect (2012, I think)...the system pushes such students through, regardless of whether they study or not....as the quota system cannot be seen as the dismal failure that it is, the result is that most 'quota' students graduate with no clue whatsoever to what they were supposed to learn..
Quotas should not exist, instead, give scholarships to anyone poor who proves their value before they get to University, but the way it is, it doesn't work....but who cares, it's politically correct.....and the leftist, bleeding heart liberals love it.

One of the big problems with Brazilian politics, is the structure of Congress....513 Federal Deputies in the Lower House, and 81 Senators. While the number of deputies in the lower house is supposed to vary according to the size of the State's population, the numbers still favour the smaller States in detriment of the larger ones, because the smaller ones end up having more than they should and the larger ones less.
Also, 3 senators per State is totally unfair, as this disproportion gives the small, poor States as much power in Congress as the large ones, which literally carry the small ones on their shoulders. The 27 senators from the NE, represent 1/3 of the Senate, yet, collectively the 9 (nine) NE States produce less than 10% of Brazil's GDP.
And to make it worse, it's usually those from the NE that are the most corrupt. Brazil is a thieves' paradise

In Chile our political caste are all generally well educated — many abroad (such as Michelle Bachelet in East Germany) but the K-thru-12 school you attend — sets your political career. (It used to be only family linage which still remains an important factor.)
Regarding the upcoming Chile elections — the political mood here is highly mixed — similar to Brazil where we will probably experience none of the candidates receiving over the 50% required* to be elected President. Our constitution requires a runoff election of the two highest vote candidates and it’s not clear who will prevail. (* For example: Allende won with only 36.2% in 1970!)
There is a strong anti-immigrant backlash as the large influx of economic migrants as well as imposed Haitian migration has depressed the pay scale for low-skilled labor. It also has placed a major overload of our public education and health systems.
Fortunately we have a strong independent central bank and they have remained very conservative.
Meanwhile the avocados are progressively being harvested and the vineyards are showing vigorous growth with a high quality of bunches (that will require thinning of half) as well as our family fruit trees showing very good estimated yields for our table.
The Naval oranges are extraordinarily sweet this Spring and I’ve been feasting on garden asparagus.
Despite our strong currency we are now seeing is the rapid cost of imported fuel, goods and equipment. The cost of sea freight has skyrocketed!
This however should be an outstanding season for us!

They think they are smarter than everyone else, but when their crimes are uncovered, they always become aggressive, indignant and swear they will prove their innocence during the proceedings.....most of the accused are indeed the scum of society, however, with good lawyers (paid with money stolen from the taxpayer), and a few immoral technical legal gimmicks, plus the help of corruptible judges, their cases get thrown out without even being investigated. That is how things work here.
I hope Chile's new constitution will be a viable proposition, and not just a piece of paper loaded with rights and no obligations.....that's what usually happens when you get lousy leftist liberals running the show, and a gullible population.
Due to the lack of sea containers, export freight here has become so damned expensive, that many times it exceeds the value of the goods.....I am glad I am no longer working in shipping, as nowadays it's just pure pressure and stress.
On the other hand, good to see that you are optimistic.

Jack — my perspective about political leaders is a bit different — although power does certainly corrupt the personal character. I have had the fortune/ misfortune to have briefly met all the Presidents of Chile since Pinochet assumed power. It’s my hope our next President and constitution being formed will be not harmful to our continued success!
Breakfast was a large Baileys coffee and my latest version of an avocado California omelet with chèvre and asparagus. It was absolutely delicious!
For lunch with my daughter — I’ve decided making my version of Spring salad with what’s at hand here — utilizing jamón serrano, asparagus spears, freshly harvested Gem lettuce, a quartered marinated artichoke heart, thinly sliced French radish, avocado, roasted pistachios and crumbled Fourme d'Ambert cheese dressed with a honey lemon vinaigrette.
(Our refrigerator is filling with asparagus spears — all bundled vertically in two baking pans with the bottoms sitting on wet tea towels. They need to be distributed to our gypsy clan.)
I had an interesting conversation last night with Madame who’s now with her girlfriend in the south. She apparently is having a great time.
I learned that besides all the other items — they also produce cherries, blueberries and raspberries.
Of all they grow — only the apples and kiwi are currently profitable. Their specialty gourmet products are all consistently losing money.
Tomorrow they are making cheese together as they both are gypsy campesinas at heart.
Meanwhile — I selected one of Joseph Conrad's works ‘The Rescue, A Romance of the Shallows’ (printed in 1920) from my grandfather’s library as I savor another wine from our cellar.
I’ve read from Conrad before and he was an excellent writer! I’m enjoying the peaceful semi-solitude.

I have found that getting the view first hand from the Natives, gives a much better perspective and level of understanding of a situation than a Copy/Pasting of some or other blither, vaguely connected to the subject, if you’re lucky.
However, be assured, I do not now think I’m expert on the subject having read just your postings, rather it informs me of how much I do not know and indeed have yet to learn.

I appreciate the very kind comments from both you. We three have all experienced an interesting life. (I remember Fidel Castro here in Chile for an entire month!)
I’ve always said that everyone understood that Pinochet made some errors — but he had an excellent will and perseverance to reconstruct our destroyed country after the overthrow of the evil Marxist government!
Financially he saved our family from bankruptcy with new programs to support exporting and certainly kept our society far away from corruption.
Aylwin and Frei were boring. Lagos (the socialist) I actually shared a pizza with him AFTER his presidency and actually liked him personally!
Michelle Bachelet I first got to know her when she became minister of defense and despite her background she was very friendly with our navy (including becoming the “godmother” of one of our Scorpène-class submarines.)
Her first presidency however was not as friendly as our naval intelligence agency was gutted and diminished. Piñera (despite his personality quirks) is one of the most intelligent Presidents in the modern era and became a billionaire outside politics. (I recommend reading his biography!)
The two highly corrupt politicians that I actually really enjoyed meeting was Carlos Menem (who perhaps was the most charming I’ve ever encountered) when he was exiling himself here in Chile with the former Miss Universe (Cecilia Bolocco). I also had an opportunity to dine with Alberto Fujimori at our Hacienda Chicureo Golf Club where he was under a very loose house arrest at one of the homes inside the club.
Fujimori was very cordial and an agronomist — I used to watch his Peruvian television program about farming. (He’s a brilliant individual with a Masters degree in mathematics and was top in his class in agronomy!) I’m saddened how he has been mistreated — but power does corrupt!

As Skippy marvels about my unique social encounters — I should add some of the interesting my life span anecdotes.
(If Señor THINK was with us — he’d confirm the strange oddities as he knows my CV and my family’s scandalous history.)
I was born into a prominent land-holding family and was afforded the privilege of education at the Grange School. I studied German as an elective — but my real interest was studying English literature.
Fortunately after graduation — because Argentina was a threat — I was given (due to my English proficiency) a full scholarship to our naval academy. (I was a cadet during the Malvinas War.)
Pinochet did NOT give our family land back — but did provide loans with my father and uncle used to buy and develop hillside being used to graze goats. (Planting vineyards and orchards is very expensive.)
After receiving my first commission in my tailored uniform with shiny brass buttons — at a party I encountered an underage Lycée Français enchantresse that I dishonorably impregnated with our first daughter. (In all fairness both my grandfathers were far more scandalous!)
It was a family disgrace to say the least — but certainly one of the most fortunate!
Most my naval career was at a desk — although I was a cadet on our four-masted barquentine Esmeralda for an entire high seas tour. I also served aboard a couple of frigates but never commanded a vessel. (Continuing as an active reserve officer was absolutely marvelous!)
My dear father gave me the wise counsel to find a third profession and for several years as I continued in the navy — I was successful in farm consulting and fruit export. (That’s how I acquired my cousin’s interest in the farm.)
In the end — the really perceived bad things in life — actually became the most fortunate!
Life is always surprising!

He came to my country with amazing insights and his unending enthusiasm for wine was alone itself intoxicating! He invited us to visit the beautiful Napa Valley and our group were entertained by his Swiss wife Margrit at their restaurant named after Julia Child located in Napa. (Very fond memories!)
Sadly the legacy was squandered by his children — but what an amazing individual!
Wine producing is a terrible financial hobby that is only for the wealthy! (The actual successful wine business is controlled by large consortiums.)

As I anticipated — my daughter went AWOL with her paramour as the harvest is going along smoothly. (She has promised to be at our co-packer facility in the afternoon.)
I’ve already ordered two delicious beef empanadas baked by the nearby old lady — which I’ll enjoy with a ginger ale.
I finished the Joseph Conrad treasure early this morning — which was a pleasure to read.
As my gypsy daughter is dining this evening with me and the asparagus continue to yield a plethora of spears I’m planning a similar salad as described before — except replacing the bacon with a large sliced chicken breast.
It will be very interesting to hear her observations.
Part of my day is monitoring the current Hass avocado market information and although freight rates have significantly risen the demand is incredibly exceeding expectations.
According to what I’m reading — the world avocado market is expected to grow — reaching a total market size of USD17.905 billion by 2025.
In comparison — specific Chile Hass avocado revenue last season was its highest record to date — and our export association is again anticipating even higher net returns!
We as a family enterprise are going against the market trend as we’re exclusively focusing on our primary customers of Wegmans Food Markets in the North East USA and TESCO in the UK — with absolutely nothing to Asia which seems is offering higher returns.
Table grapes are always volatile as although our valley miraculously was spared by a rare mid-season rainfall (destroying the grape harvest) our net returns was the highest our family has ever experienced.
Agriculture is the riskiest gambling casino on our planet Earth…
I still need to select a dusty bottle from the cellar and a forgotten book from the library for the evening…

I’ve already harvested over a dozen asparagus spears and a head of both Little Gem and baby Romaine lettuces along with a French radish from our garden.

The delicious breakfast with my daughter was again an avocado, asparagus and chèvre omelette with perfectly prepared cafè lattes.
As advised — my son and his family arrived early this morning to escape Vitacura to the farm. The grandchildren alone are a joy and currently their parents are both on the Hondas enjoying the countryside.
My Schwiegertochter has advised me that she’s in charge of the kitchen although my son and I are allowed to have an asado in the quincho which we’ll do in the afternoon.
They’ve arrived with a marvelous butterflied boneless leg of lamb which has been trimmed of fat and currently sitting in a bag that was marinated last night.
My son and I will grill and my “third daughter” will prepare the accompanying dishes.
Our plans for the day is to simply enjoy the family and gardening with the grandchildren.
Although my son cellars his wine collection here — he has brought as tribute a highly rated ‘16 Viña Santa Carolina Gran Reserva Petit Verdot.

I’m at the quincho as we already have the leg of lamb sizzling over the grapewood coals — which requires constant vigilance. The aromatic smell of the marinated lamb is almost celestial!
As soon as the grandchildren return — I’ll garden with them — including letting them pull a few carrots, cut the asparagus and pick the lettuces.
This particular Saturday is exceptionally wonderful!

Oct 24th, 2021 - 11:19 am - Link - Report abuse +1This morning my Schwiegertochter prepared an amazing breakfast reflecting her Alemán-Chilean heritage with my other daughter freshly squeezing tangerines for juice for the children and to make mimosas for the adults. (We truly enjoy this refreshing combination of champenoise and tangerine.)
Yesterday’s delicious rosemary garlic lamb was outstanding with leftovers now in the refrigerator — along with an amazing German mustard potato salad that we barely touched as we had a fresh garden salad and asparagus spears each wrapped with a thin slice of jamón Ibérico.
The grandchildren and I constructed a bamboo frame structure and planted peas and beans at each of the four corners. (The bamboo roof will eventually be covered with peas and the children were delighted with the idea!)
We also picked together Naval oranges, lemons and tangerines for them taking home.
In the afternoon we’ll enjoy what we describe as “la once” which is an afternoon luncheon or “elevenses” highlighted with a creamy nectarine küchen. (* ONCE”actually represented the word aguardiente which is an eleven letter name for pisco.)
This weekend is marvelous and I’m only saddened that they will return to Vitacura in the late afternoon — as well as my daughter departs to visit with her love interest.
